Ancient Greece Awaits: Rumors Swirl Around a Thrilling New God of War Side-Story Game Slated for 2025

Rumors are swirling that God of War may finally return to Greek mythology. While Kratos’ adventures in the world of the Norse gods have been well-received by fans and critics, nostalgic enthusiasts have long requested that the series return to its roots and delve even deeper into the Ghost of Sparta’s war with Olympus. Despite rumors that Sony Santa Monica would release a remaster of the original Greek mythology games to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary, fans are now hoping the latest round of reports is more accurate.

Over on Bluesky, reputable leaker and insider Jeff Grubb claimed that God of War side-story set in ancient Greece is slated to release in 2025. Grubb doesn’t go into any further details beyond acknowledging that his source previously said that a reveal would happen to coincide with the franchise’s anniversary: That happened to be the Dark Odyssey Collection update for God of War Ragnarok, an announcement that left many fans disappointed. As with all rumors, it’s worth taking this with a grain of salt until PlayStation or Sony Santa Monica officially unveils the alleged project.

A Return To Greece Would Be Great

Even If It Is A Smaller Game

Given the popularity of the classic God of War games, it stands to reason that Sony would want to provide the community with a chance to once again explore ancient Greece. With PlayStation’s upcoming line-up of exclusive games looking a little sparse, aside from a few heavy-hitters like Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2: On The Beachhaving a smaller game to pad out the release schedule for 2025 would be a good move. If the rumor does turn out to be accurate, there’s a good chance the project is much more focused than something like God of War: Ragnarok.

Perhaps the most likely strategy for a Greek-set God of War side-story would be to take a similar route to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles MoralesA spin-off that reused many assets of its predecessor Marvel’s Spider-Man, the game was much smaller in scope but introduced plenty of new mechanics and an original story to set it apart from the original experience. It’s not impossible to imagine Sony Santa Monica repurposing some elements of God of War: Ragnarok to create a unique adventure.

More God Of War Is Always A Good Thing

But Greek Mythology Is Especially Fun

As much as I enjoyed God of War‘s Norse Saga, I’ve always found the Greek games to be more enjoyable. They tell far less complicated stories that, in some respects, haven’t aged all that well but the sheer scale of the world and enemies was unmatched. With some tweaks to the combat to make it a little more diverse, it would be a joy to once again battle the Olympians.
