InZoi’s life simulator mechanics are not much different from your traditional life sim titles like The Sims, where you get to create your own character and determine the type of life they live, and the game does its job pretty well in the life sim department.

However, another game is silently outdoing Inzoi at its own genre, and if your guess was 11 Bit Studios’ The Alters, then you’re correct. It’s a far cry from Krafton’s life sim aesthetically and narratively, but its survival elements just make it a better life sim than InZoi.

The Alters does a better job of being a life sim than InZoi

For starters, InZoi is a game where you can build your own Zoi and make them do various day-to-day stuff in an open world. Be it education, social interactions, or romantic relationships, InZoi has all you could imagine for a life sim.

However, The Alters takes everything that InZoi does up a notch by adding survival elements to it, which not only paves the way for a more dynamic gameplay but also proves that social sims don’t have to be restricted to traditional life sims. They can be so much more.

In The Alters, you assume the role of Jan Dolski, whose task is to make alternate versions of himself to survive on a planet that’s considered uninhabitable. It has all the things that you’d expect from a survival game, like mining and crafting resources, brainstorming ways to survive, etc.

Here’s the fun part: it’s not just your typical survival game as it implements a life-sim experience to create a never-seen-before gameplay loop. The social sim elements are introduced through the alternate versions of the main character.

Each alternate version has its specific skillset, histories, personalities, strengths, and weaknesses, which breeds the social sim experience perfectly, even more than InZoi. Your goal is to work with yourselves and handle conflicts between the multiple personalities in an attempt to survive.

There are grave consequences to your decisions in The Alters, which makes the title stand out in a pool of social sims like InZoi, Persona, and Stardew Valley. Since every Alter possesses different personalities, it’s guaranteed that you won’t get along with everyone.

One moment, everyone is content with the way resources are being handled by the Alters, and the next moment, there’s a conflict between them, putting everyone’s survivability at stake. The unpredictable nature of The Alters keeps you on the edge of your seat as you don’t know what will happen next.

There’s a clear urgency to get off the planet as soon as possible, since one second of real-world time equates to one minute in-game. Pair all of these elements with the social sim offered by the interaction with the Alters, and a single-player narrative-driven experience, and you get the uniqueness of The Alters.

According to SteamDB, The Alters has more concurrent players on Steam than InZoi, with over 7,600 players at the time of writing. Seems like players have already welcomed this unique social sim survival adventure with open arms.

Meanwhile, Krafton’s life sim isn’t doing too hot on players right now, with less than 2,000 players currently in the game. The supposed Sims-killer is getting flak for still being in Early Access. Even the 11-year-old The Sims 4 is outdoing InZoi’s PC performance.

The game also received backlash for allowing the use of generative AI to create in-game objects and patterns, and while Krafton has confirmed that they’re using it ethically, it sets a dangerous precedent for future games to go ham with AI where it’s not required.

Furthermore, the price tag for InZoi is pretty high for an Early Access title, which could be another reason why players are going for The Alters more than InZoi, since the former’s price is comparatively lower.
