Clair Obscur Expedition 33 developers wanted to see how players would break the game to finish it the fastest, because it is inevitable.

We can all agree thatĀ Clair Obscur: Expedition 33Ā is a gorgeous narrative-driven game with tough boss battles. However, we all know about the segment of players who like to challenge themselves to beat the game the fastest. You guessed correctly, it’s speedrunners.

While some developers frown upon the existence of such players using glitches to break the game, Sandfall Interactive isn’t one of them. Moreover, the developers themselves want to see how players will break the polished game to do something unthinkable. So yeah,Ā Expedition 33Ā officially has a speedrunners allowed tag.

Speedrunners are surely different breeds as they break games like nobody’s business. But why do they do it? Well, it’s a different kind of fun. While games are generally designed to be finished after spending hours, speedrunners directly challenge the developers.

While no game developers want glitches in their game highlighted, speedrunners give their all to find each of them. Sandfall Interactive, however, wants to watch these players breakĀ Clair Obscur Expedition 33Ā to find unique solutions to reach the end.

Not that the news came out officially, but the cast members shared the will of Guillaume Broche during anĀ interviewĀ with IGN. This is what one of the cast members quoted during the interview.

I think Guillaume has said himself that, like, he wants to see people do no-hit runs. He wants people to experiment with the fastest way they can complete it, because this game is obviously a really beautiful narrative and an amazing immersive world, an amazing story. But also, it’s a playground for fun, and it’s just really cool to see people kind of like play the game — in the way it was intended

Of course, theĀ ā€˜way it was intended’ part was a sarcasm, but it’s clear that Sandfall wanted to watch their game be broken. Not that it is the recommended way to finish the game, but the goal is the same for all.

The only thing the speedrunners are doing is setting a record of beating it the fastest. You don’t have to do that necessarily, as narrative-driven games are a journey, so you should relish it while it lasts. For aĀ masterpiece likeĀ Expedition 33,Ā you should be doing the latter, if you’re here for fun.

Why is breaking a game considered fun?

If you’re the type of gamer who likes to play by the rules, there’s no harm in that. However, if tools are given in the game to go beyond the rules, why should you stop yourself? It’s not just speedrunners; every hardcore gamer likes to find the means to end up more powerful than usual.

For instance, esports players make unique strategies that use in-game mechanics to do something extraordinary. For instance, inĀ Counter-Strike, players stack over each other’s bodies to create a tower that can see far and long. It’s not illegal to do, as it isn’t a glitch.

But in case those strategies are too powerful and unbalanced, then developers make the necessary changes. In some esports games likeĀ Valorant, using glitches can even cause a ban. However, if you’re playing single-player games, should those rules apply there too?

It depends on how accessible the glitches are. If they’re easy to perform, devs will probably fix them. If they’re tough to encounter, then why not leave them as they are? For example, inĀ Clair Obscur Expedition 33, there’s a boss that can be misused to gain aĀ lot of lumina. It’s aĀ neat trick, but it isn’t for all, as the boss is very difficult.

Do you think speedrunner time should be counted when the time to beat is concerned? Do you think speedrunners take away the fun from games and make them unnecessarily competitive? Share your views in the comments below!
