Nexus Mods’ new owner is a shady corporation, and gamers believe that the era of free mods is now coming to an end. We’re truly cooked.
Nexus Mods is the biggest and oldest repository of PC mods. However, itâs been recently revealed that the website has been sold to new owners after 24 years of existence. Founder Robin âDark0neâ Scott has explained that he had to make this ultimate decision due to anxiety and stress-related health issues.
Who are the new owners of NexusMods? Well, thatâs something thatâs still unknown. Dark0ne didnât go into much detail about who will be handling all the operations now. Although itâs been stated that Victor and Marinus will lead the next chapter of the site, a bit of digging by the community has sparked fears that the golden age of Nexus might be coming to an end.

Itâs fair to say that Nexus Mods have defined generations of gamers, so itâs not surprising that they arenât taking the ownership changing hands lightly. On ResetEra, user RandmolyRandom67 kicked off their investigations after it was reported that Nexus had been sold. Their initial discovery suggested that the new owners might be based in the Netherlands or Scandinavia.
With further help from other community members, the user was able to trace back the acquisition to a company called Chosen. This companyâs mission is to partner with founders and elevate what theyâve built. Chosen wants to help amplify the impact of these developers and support their business for years to come.
Basically, this is an investment firm that targets companies that are centered around user-generated context, and its main focus is maximizing profitability. Whatâs interesting is that the community has also found a monetization guide created by Chosenâs CEO that lists NFTs, digital goods, and in-app purchases as the key tools for increasing monetization.

As youâd expect, gamers are worried after all these discoveries. On various social media platforms, players have expressed concerns about the acquisition of NexusMods as they believe Chosen will try its best to monetize Nexus Mods heavily. This could come in the form of restrictions on a number of downloadable mods, limits on file sizes, and even the end of free mods.
Nothing is confirmed as of now. However, itâs surely going to be disappointing if the alleged new owners decide to prioritize profits over the community and ruin one of the last bastions of the gaming community. For now, we can only hope that this shady corporate entity doesnât ruin everything that makes the website so special.
Why did Nexus Mods decide to change ownership?

Dark0ne founded Nexus back in 2001 from his bedroom due to his passion for the Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Under his leadership, the website managed to reach over 10 billion downloads and established a proper support system for creators and modders.
Why is Dark0ne stepping away? Well, heâs made a post on the official website explaining his reasons. According to him, running Nexus had a serious impact on his health and led to anxiety and stress-related issues.
Dark0ne was suffering from burnout, which started to affect the websiteâs functioning and the morale of his staff. After constantly being on the call, he decided that stepping down and making way for new leadership was the right decision to move Nexus Mods forward.
Although the founder wonât be responsible for managing the websiteâs operations anymore, he isnât leaving Nexus behind. Dark0ne has confirmed that he will be involved in all the behind-the-scenes work and even help with the siteâs direction.
