Adolescence Season 2 “Possibility” Addressed By Stephen Graham & EP

Jamie is getting upset while being interviewed in Adolescence

Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters address whether there is a future for Adolescence beyond its initial batch of episodes. The series focuses on a seemingly ordinary British family whose lives are shattered when their 13-year-old son becomes suspected of committing a horrific crime, with the true terrifying depth of the murder being revealed with each episode. In the Adolescence cast, Graham served as a writer and portrayed the Miller family patriarch, Eddie, with the series earning widespread acclaim.

When speaking to Variety, Graham and Walters addressed the future of Adolescence. While Graham stated future projects would depend on Netflix’s approval of the series’ viewership, Walters was keen to tackle similar stories, only ruling out a prequel. Check out the star’s and producer’s response below:

Graham: “Possibly, let’s see how the figures are. But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.”
Walters: A prequel to Adolescence, that’s certainly not going to happen. But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else. But yeah, everything’s looking good … everyone’s happy, shall we say?”

What Graham & Walters’ Comments Mean For Adolescence’s Future

Adolescence‘s story arguably doesn’t require expansion. The series dives into how the Miller family is shattered by the misogynistic ideology Jamie (Owen Cooper) has consumed, how he became enveloped in it, and the horrific consequences it holds both throughout the immediate aftermath and later into his sentence. As such, any expansion could minimize the incredible impact, as the story’s power lies in how this mundane world is so suddenly shattered. Remaining with the characters can dilute Adolescence’s ending by making them feel like more than everyday ordinary people.

However, it is hard to deny that Netflix will be invested thanks to the real-world impact of Adolescence in terms of viewership and cultural response, as the series sparked discussion online and within the halls of the UK’s Houses of Parliament. As the show has become a cultural moment, Graham and Walter’s eagerness to tackle similar subjects could manifest in either the Adolescence title becoming an anthology format, or the pair simply developing new dramas using the format. Regardless of what the future holds, Walters and writer Jack Thorne have previously stated that Miller’s case is closed.

Our Thoughts On Adolescence’s Future At Netflix

The Subject Matter Is One Graham Has Frequently Revisited

Owen Cooper as Jamie Miller in Adolescence

When looking back at Graham’s past filmography, one recurring subject throughout his work is the effects of extremism and the dangers of right-wing ideologies. This can be seen in Adolescence’s dive into how misogynistic voices online are warping a generation of young boys, This Is England‘s exploration of nationalism in the 1980s, or The Walk-In‘s real-world tale of assassination plots. With Graham willing to tackle similar tales following Adolescence’s success, he likely has more to say on the subject, especially as it remains a recognizable threat facing the world today.
