The team of volunteer developers working on the huge project shared an update about their passion project in a developer Q&A and gameplay demo on the Rebelzize YouTube channel (as spotted by TweakTown). During the showcase, they stated that the project, which had been ongoing since 2012, is finally almost ready to be released for players to enjoy. The team states: “We would like to share today that Skyblivion is in a state where we can promise a 2025 release at the latest.”

Although the two games were released only five years apart—Oblivion came out in 2006 and Skyrim in 2011—the latter runs on Bethesda’s Creation Engine, which provided huge graphical improvements over the more outdated Gamebryo engine of the former. The Skyblivion project is meant to bring Oblivion “to a new generation of gamers and re-introduce it to long-time fans of the series” using the newer engine from Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition.

The First Release Is Just The Beginning Of The Huge Project

The Skyblivion project has been ongoing since 2012, with the first four years dedicated just to porting the older title into the new game engine. Since then, the team has grown to over 50 volunteers led by project lead Rebelzize, all working hard on remastering the Oblivion title to make it look and play as well as possible.
And that’s just the beginning, as the scope of the project is even larger than you might imagine. Once the devs release the original pre-DLC content from Oblivion in Skyrim’s engine, they have their sights set on also remastering Oblivion’s nine DLCs as well as the Shivering Isles expansion.
The recreation of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is currently on track to release in 2025, potentially giving fans something to do until Elder Scrolls VI comes out. When it launches, Skyblivion will be available to all fans for free but will require players to have a copy of both Skyrim: Special Edition and Oblivion.
