An Unresolved Squid Game Season 2 Plot Thread Has Major Implications for the Front Man in Season 3

The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) is sitting in a chair on Squid Game. Throughout Squid Game’s second season, fans see a more duplicitous side of the Front Man. He embeds himself as a spy in Gi-hun’s Team X, manipulating them as they try to rebel against the game’s handlers. He comes off as silently menacing, eventually sabotaging the raid against the control room.

The Front Man causes many deaths in the Squid Game Season 2 ending. However, he maintains his identity after losing his civilian persona and masking back up. He now has Gi-hun and many other resistance members to punish. Notably, there is a key twist that occurs that could have massive implications for him in the third season. It involves a pregnant woman in the competition: Jun-hee.

Jun-hee got pregnant by a crypto dealer, Myung-gi, in Squid Game Season 2. He thought she had an abortion, as he asked. But as fate would have it, Jun-hee kept the baby, only to end up on the island with him. She needs money, as does he, all due to his crypto scheme bankrupting everyone, including himself and Jun-hee. She is initially spiteful and bitter, hating how he treated her so flippantly.

In time, Jun-hee defends Myung-gi from bullies. She also offers help in certain games, and keeps him out of the raid. There is compassion and love brewing again. Part of her thinks that he is her soulmate, while a segment of Myung-gi feels remorse over how he treated her. He wouldn’t mind winning, starting a family, and paying off their debt. Of course, his selfish side could emerge if he realizes he’ll have to choose between her and the jackpot.

Jun-hee’s innocence and belief in people inspire so many on Gi-hun’s team. The elderly Geum-ja takes care of her, knowing the child is at risk. The former military operative, Hyun-ju, warms to Jun-hee, too. Hyun-ju eventually sides with Team X in wanting to vote and leave the island. That’s the power Jun-hee has: she gets people to see what’s best for the world: love and kindness. They had no clue these games would involve murder, leaving Jun-hee as a moral compass to remind them not to choose money over the sanctity of life.

Squid Game’s Jun-hee Could Help Redeem the Front Man

Jun-hee stares at the gunmen in Squid Game Season 2 Jun-hee could be the key in Squid Game Season 3 to the Front Man seeing that there is still room to atone. He killed Gi-hun’s best friend, Jung-bae, and is set to commit more atrocities. He does, however, have a soft spot for Jun-hee, which stems from his backstory as In-ho: his pregnant wife died after he couldn’t muster money for a liver transplant. The South Korean healthcare system failed them, leaving him vengeful as he ran up the ranks on the island.

All the Front Man wants is to make selfish people suffer. But when In-ho was undercover as Young-il in Team X, he came off as a father to Jun-hee. She brought out his warmer side. He even got them to joke that the baby was their unofficial teammate after games like the penthathlon. It seemed like he was seeing his hopeful wife in Jun-hee. Back then, his wife made it clear she wouldn’t abort their child. She believed the money would come. That sort of optimism exists in Jun-hee, which could hold a mirror up to the Front Man and remind him when he was a husband.

Ultimately, it would be a nuanced way of offering In-ho redemption. The Front Man is a spiritual mask, as much as it is a physical one. It’s the Darth Vader to his Anakin Skywalker: a warped form of order. But if Jun-hee gets him to remember when he was a good cop and a family man, then she may unlock the person who could help Gi-hun’s people get off the island. It would be a betrayal to the elites, but it would suit the man In-ho once was: an honorable, selfless person who would want to make his beloved proud from the afterlife.
