According to SteamDB, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been attracting a record number of players who are itching to dive into feudal Japan, and those numbers are expected to climb as the game’s opening weekend progresses. Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ player count on Steam hit an all-time high of 59,651 on Saturday afternoon, and is likely to climb higher still.

For context, Assassin’s Creed Origins reached 41,541 players and Odyssey 61,984 players, so for Shadows to hit these numbers so early into its release is nothing short of impressive.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Player Count Is A Big Win For Ubisoft

The Latest Game Is Already Exceeding Expectations

Ubisoft previously announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows reached an impressive one million players on the day of its release alone. Unsurprisingly, this figure continues to rise, and it’s worth noting that the SteamDB figures only reflect Steam: the total number of PlayStation and Xbox players isn’t typically announced, though it’s likely Ubisoft will report on more sales milestones in the coming days.

As one of the longest-running video game franchises, Assassin’s Creed has seen a lot of ups and downs over the years, with an emphasis on the “downs” in more recent installments. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the predecessor to Shadows, only hit just shy of 8,000 players during its all-time peak, while Valhalla, which debuted on Steam significantly after its launch on PlayStation and Xbox, peaked in the mid-15,000s range despite selling over 20 million copies.

At the time of this writing, Shadows is a mere two thousand players away from exceeding Odyssey’s player count, and it seems Alexios and Kassandra will have to make way for Yasuke and Naoe. This is great news for Ubisoft and fans of Assassin’s Creed, who have been vocal about their concerns for the franchise over the years.

Early reviews indicated success for Shadows as well, as does player reception, with the game currently rated at “Very Positive” on Steam. Even if Assassin’s Creed Shadows doesn’t quite top Odyssey’s Steam playercount, it’s certainly a big win for Ubisoft.
