Designing The Witcher 3’s Battle Of Kaer Morhen Almost Broke The Devs, Says Cyberpunk Creator

The best payoff for completing all the side quests and character missions in certain games is when they all come to assist you in the big final battle. We’ve seen it in games like Mass Effect 3, Baldur’s Gate 3, and the Dragon Age series, but one of the best versions of this is the Battle of Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Depending on your actions in the game, the likes of Cerys and Crach an Craite, Letho, Emhyr, and Dijkstra will show up at the School of the Wolf’s stronghold to help Geralt take on the Wild Hunt. However, it seems that all these permutations and combinations weren’t easy to put together for CD Projekt Red devs, especially since they depended on player choices.

It All Came Together In The End

This comes directly from Paweł Sasko, who worked on The Witcher 3 and is currently working on the sequel of Cyberpunk 2077. He replied to a post on Twitter that praised the Battle of Kaer Morhen as the best mission in the main story of the game. However, he also revealed that the mission was very hard to design and gave him sleepless nights (thanks, GamesRadar+).

“The hardest quest I have ever designed and implemented,” replied Sasko to the tweet. “Especially the technical part kicked my ass, so many custom solutions and branches. I was losing my mind and my sleep, when trying to put it together. Happy you enjoy it.

I’ll admit, I didn’t know this was the case during my first playthrough. It was only during my second playthrough that I noticed Letho sharpening his sword in the background of some scenes and fighting off some baddies later on. It was quite a surprise having the Viper school Witcher show up, as I thought it was going to be the same bunch of people as last time.

Given how many characters will come to your aid based on your in-game actions, it’s understandable why Sasko had a tough time with it. However, it’s safe to say that the final product turned out perfect.
