Diogo Jota’s parents did all they could to ensure the Liverpool star was able to live out his dream of being a professional football player.

On Thursday, it was announced that the 28-year-old tragically died in a single-car accident in Spain, alongside his brother Andre Silva, after the star was advised not to fly. Once the news was confirmed, tributes from all across the sporting landscape poured in, with LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and many, many more posting their messages.

As tributes continue to pour in for the star, the outpouring of support shows what kind of person and player Jota was. And in a way, how the 28-year-old conducted himself was indicative of his parents and his upbringing before he became a star footballer.

In an interview with the BBC some time before his death, Jota shared the sacrifices his parents made to ensure he could live out his dream of being among the best players in the world. Even when he was 16, he was still needing to pay to play soccer rather than being part of a professional club’s academy.

When asked what he would say to his 16-year-old self, he stated: “It’s hard, especially because I wasn’t paying, my parents were.

“I remember that was the hardest thing for me because I could see their struggle to get the money in the club and I think that caused me a debt that I will never pay them back, but obviously I tried to do that.

“In the end, each situation that you go through, it’s like we spoke before, it’s an experience that you need to learn from it and when you are facing those kind of difficulties, I think that makes you a better person in the end.”

Jota also said that his parents instilled in him a mindset of perseverance, regardless of what happened as he made his way through European football.

“Mainly to not give up, I think, even when we are, like I was, playing in very low divisions. Not just me, they can find loads of examples. It’s always possible to reach the top. I think to never give up is the main idea,” he concluded.

And it was clear that mindset proved to be beneficial for the 28-year-old, helping Liverpool win the Premier League, the FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. He also scored 65 goals in 182 games, playing an integral part of the team that lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final in 2022.

After his death was confirmed, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp posted a message proclaiming that he was lost after hearing the tragedy. “This is a moment where I struggle!” Klopp began. “There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it! I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre.

“Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much! All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace – Love, J.”

Current Liverpool manager Arne Slot released a lengthy statement: “The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him luck for his forthcoming wedding. In many ways, it was a dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that it should end like this. …

“My condolences go to Diogo’s wife, Rute, their three beautiful children and to the parents of Diogo and Andre Silva. When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song. For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten.”
