Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is an RPG whose world is filled to the brim with places to see, people to meet, and things to do. The quests in this game are numerous, each one as varied as they are intricate. Some are serious, others humorous, and then some are…bizarre.

The latter is especially true for The Thunderstone, a side quest that despite its grand name can be described in three simple words: convoluted, bizarre, and entertaining. It involves Henry, a group of people, and a misadventure sprawled across nearly half of the game’s 2nd region of Kuttenberg, all for the purpose of finding luck.

A Simple Beginning to a Convoluted Journey

As stated earlier, The Thunderstone is a side quest found in the game’s second region of Kuttenberg, specifically in the small town of Grund. The quest giver is Kona, a young woman who seeks help with a personal matter. She asks Henry, and by extension the players, to help in finding an item of great importance, one touched by the very heavens themselves: a thunderstone.

In the game’s lore, and some pieces of medieval history, a thunderstone is an item that serves as a ward; a protective relic that’s said to safeguard the holder from harm or misfortune. This stone’s supposed power is the reason Kona asks for Henry’s help, to help gain its protection for the end of her pregnancy. To find it, she points players in the direction of Horscham, where a man named Thomlin is said to possess this stone.

Finding Thomlin, Henry is tasked with gaining the thunderstone from him, and this can be done through a variety of options. The simplest way would be to succeed in one of the speech checks. If players are lacking in this regard, however, the other option would be to challenge him for it, which involves a decent skill in fisticuffs and a hefty sum of 500 groschen. If neither option is ideal, there’s a third option that involves stealing the stone from him.

And this is where the madness begins. Whatever option is taken, Henry soon discovers that the thunderstone in Thomlin’s possession is no thunderstone at all. It is in fact, a regular stone, one carved into the thunderstone’s likeness and passed off as such. When pushed, Thomlin reveals that the real thunderstone was stolen from him by a pair of thieves, one of them named Peter who comes from Raborsch.

A Quest For Luck and Fortune

From here, the journey begins — though journey may be a bit of an exaggeration. The better term would be misadventure, a misadventure sprawled across a great deal of the Kuttenberg region, involving a handful of towns, a few good-intentioned albeit asinine citizens, and dangerous bandits. The latter bit is the only action-packed content found within, as the remainder of the quest is filled with dialogue that serves as the backdrop for the quest itself, and traveling as an overqualified errand boy.

After talking with Thomlin, Henry is sent to find Peter of Raborsch, the last supposed holder of the thunderstone. A statement that soon turns out to be false, as upon meeting him, players discover that it is in fact his partner Hensel who has the stone. And guess where Hensel is? In the middle of an abandoned mill, one that has recently been occupied by a group of bandits and cutthroats.

Now when it comes to dealing with the bandits, one of three options can be taken. The first, and perhaps the easiest (and expensive) option, would be to pay for Hensel’s freedom; a ransom price of 1000 groschen. If players don’t have the money, there’s a second option of persuading the bandits to let Hensel go. This, however, involves a difficult speech check.

If lacking in funds or persuasion, then there is only one option left: to kill the bandits and rescue Hensel. This will be the most difficult option of the three, as the mill is heavily patrolled and each enemy is armed and armored. Their leader Andrew is especially difficult to beat, as he possesses a unique heavy weapon called the Ramhead, a warhammer that can bludgeon flesh and break bones even beneath armor.

Once the bandits are dealt with and Hensel is free, the thunderstone will finally be within grasp, or not. No, even after taking on an armed company of cutthroats and rescuing the last known carrier of the thunderstone, it’s revealed to the players that the thunderstone was in Hensel’s possession, but was stolen by the bandit leader Andrew, who then sold the thunderstone to a woman named Mlada in Suchdol. And so, the madness of this journey continues.

Finding Mlada, players find her hesitant to give Henry the stone because of her husband’s malady. So to gain it, players can take one of two options: steal the stone, or cure the husband. The latter involves the completion of another side quest and waiting an entire day in-game for the results. The former would understandably seem like the most enticing option, and Henry can instead steal the stone from here. But it always pays to be a good Samaritan, right? After all, players have come this far already. Why not end it on a good note?

The Thunderstone Quest Can End With Three Unique Options

Only One Can Feel Lucky

Either way, after dealing with Mlada, and after a multitude of errands, searching, and risking life and limb, the thunderstone is finally in Henry’s possession. From here, the quest can end with three unique choices, each with its own reward. Henry can either give the stone to Kona as they promised, give it to Thomlin instead, or keep the stone for himself entirely.

Players have three options at the end of the quest
They can give the thunderstone to Konan, Thomlin, or keep it for themselves
The rewards are varied, the trial great, and the quest itself both an annoying and entertaining scavenger hunt

Giving the thunderstone to Kona, along with showing her that Henry is a man of his word, gives players access to a new skill teacher in craftsmanship, along with discounted prices at the horse trader in Grund. She also gives the recipe to craft Lethean Water, a potion that can reset Henry’s perk points. And on top of all that, she gives a sum of 100 groschen, one which the players can take or choose for her to keep.

If the thunderstone is given to Thomlin, the rewards are much less substantial. He will also give players 100 groschen, but will also train them in unarmed combat. When compared between the two, it should be fairly obvious which is the better deal.

However, if players choose instead to keep the thunderstone for themselves, it will be placed into their inventory as the Thunderstone Charm. This is a unique charm that gives players a permanent buff to Henry’s stats while it remains in his possession. The specifics of these stats include a 10% bonus to stamina regeneration, an equal 10% reduction to stamina use, and a 5% reduction to the stamina cost of blocking and parrying. This is the kind of buff that may entice players to be a bit selfish, and rightly so, after all they went through to get the stone.

Either way, whatever options are taken and whatever choices are made, The Thunderstone is perhaps the most bizarre and convoluted quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. It is a fetch quest of the grandest proportions, one that involves the search for what can only be described as Bohemia’s most glorified lucky charm. The test for patience is great here, but once more it shows itself to be both one of the most annoying and most entertaining quests found in the game.
