Dragon Age: The Veilguard dives into the deeper end of inclusivity in video games, and here’s why.

It has been interesting to see how Dragon Age: The Veilguard and its reception have turned out after the game’s release. The title weaves many trans and non-binary identities into its storytelling, which the game’s director, Corinne Busche, a trans woman herself, has worked on to ensure the characters feel comfortable talking about their real selves.

The game’s character creation system is the perfect example of how the studio has gone to lengths to make the game feel inclusive. Players can customize and interact with the characters to a great extent, which more or less also helps in making sure there is more depth in them and the plotline.

Developed by BioWare and published by EA, last year’s Dragon Age doesn’t only focus on aesthetics but also heavily on integrating gender identity in its gameplay. Players can make different choices in-game through dialogues and explore characters and their gender journey while making genuine connections and understanding.
Highlighting how this is one of the most important parts of the game, the director of Dragon Age: The Veilgard, Corinne Busche, revealed the following in an interview via Polygon.
My favorite moments on the topic are not just the moment of introspection and being able to say to yourself that you’re trans or non-binary, It’s actually those disclosure moments that happen later on where you meet another character that you feel comfortable disclosing to, or you start developing a relationship with one of your companions and you want to disclose.
Busche’s considerate use of they/them pronouns when referring to a few different characters in the game is another sign of how significant it has remained for the studio throughout to make sure there is an authentic representation of the community.
Why Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an important game in contemporary times
Dragon Age: The Veilguard tried to bring a revolution around in the industry | BioWare
The inclusion of different characters in the game who don’t feel afraid or embarrassed of their real identity is a bigger deal than many of you might think. Not only does it make the title feel more authentic, but it brings about a change in the industry, focusing on more inclusivity.
The gaming industry has always been more orthodox and ruthless regarding these matters, with many even criticizing the decision to make the game feel inclusive by going so out of the way.
However, it needs to be understood that every decision while making Dragon Age: The Veilguard was taken intentionally and with the creative liberty of the studio and what they wanted to represent.
