Resident Evil fans are desperately hoping that the next movie reboot finally gets it right and does the survival horror series the justice it deserves.
When it comes to video game to movie adaptations, we Resident Evil fans have had it rough and that’s not even taking into account that woeful live-action Netflix series that was cancelled after just one season.
Fans of Capcom’s iconic survival horror series have had it so rough, we’ve had to programme our brains to convince ourselves that the Paul W.S. Anderson movies fall into the ‘so bad it’s good’ category. Though I must admit, Resident Evil: Apocalypse is a guilty pleasure of mine.
There was a glimmer of hope that the 2021 movie, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City would finally be the adaptation that fans have been waiting for.
Sadly, amongst all of Welcome to Raccoon City’s issues, attempting to cram the events of the first two games in the series into less than two hours was a near-impossible task, especially to a level of quality that fans expect.
Now, the Resident Evil movie franchise is having yet another reboot and dare I say it, could we finally be getting the movie that this beloved series deserves? We certainly hope so.
In an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, Zach Cregger will be writing and directing the next Resident Evil movie reboot.
From 1998 to 2021, Zach Cregger was relatively unknown in the entertainment industry, at least from a mainstream perspective, directing short movies and episodes for various TV productions.
However, Zach Cregger finally put his name on the map with the brilliant 2022 horror movie Barbarian (and no, it’s not the series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger).
I don’t want to give anything away, but Barbarian might not be what you’d expect but if you’re a horror movie fan, I couldn’t recommend it enough.
If you’re familiar with Barbarian then there’s a good chance that news of Zach Cregger being in charge of the next Resident Evil reboot is music to your ears. Whether his Resident Evil movie finally lives up to its potential, remains to be seen.
For now, at least, I’ll proceed with cautious optimism.
