Final Fantasy remakes have been a popular topic thanks to the massive undertaking that the FF7 remake trilogy has been, and how much it changed the original game. For a long time, there was no shortage of requests for the FF7 remake we’re finally getting. Now, players have their eyes set on what the next remake might be, and one of the most requested options is Final Fantasy 9. While I have nothing against FF9, it isn’t the game that I believe should be next in line for a remake.

So far, the next Final Fantasy game receiving a remake hasn’t been officially revealed by Square Enix. However, there have been leaks suggesting that Final Fantasy 9 might get a remake next, although not one with changes made to the extent that FF7 had. Of course, leaks can’t be trusted completely, and even when they’re true at the time, a lot can change during the development of a game. Besides, I think a different game in the franchise needs a remake more than FF9.

Final Fantasy 6 Should Receive The Next FF7 Remake Treatment

A Complete Overhaul And Update

Final Fantasy 6 is sometimes confused with Final Fantasy 3, because the release order for North America was a little different from Japan’s release order when it comes to early Final Fantasy games. I know that Final Fantasy 6 has gotten a pixel remaster in the past, but a pixel remaster is a far cry from a full remake. It makes the game more accessible for modern audiences, especially since the pixel remaster includes a PC version, but that doesn’t always make it more appealing to a modern audience.

I enjoy my fair share of pixel games, but I feel like the graphics of newer Final Fantasy games have spoiled players, myself included. The character details in FF7 Remake help give the cast an extra layer of depth that wasn’t possible to include in the original game because of its graphical and technological limitations. While FF7 was already a beloved game with its original graphics, its looks along with its outdated gameplay mechanics and control schemes that weren’t made with a PC or newer controllers in mind can be enough to deter players from giving it a try.

As far as pixel games go, Final Fantasy 6 is fun and playable when you use the remastered version, and it’s not too expensive to get your hands on. But I’ll be honest and say that I’m among the players who wouldn’t consider pixelated graphics as my preferred style, especially for RPGs. In comparison, the graphics for FF9 don’t look bad. They’re outdated, but they hold up decently well. A remaster and touch up for controls would be enough to significantly upgrade FF9, so it’s not in dire need of a full remake like FF7 received.

Another Fight Against God

FF6 has one of Final Fantasy’s best villains, with Kefka heading the plots that threaten the entire world. Kefka used Terra as a tool, requesting that she burn 50 soldiers to death after he put a slave crown on her in order to test her magic. You could summarize the game as a battle between a great empire trying to conquer the world and a group of rebels trying to stop it, or even as a fight against fate and gods to forge your own destiny. Veteran Final Fantasy players will find these storylines rather familiar.

Of course, the story is much more complex than that, which tends to be the case with the Final Fantasy franchise. FF6 is set in a world where magic has become legend, but Terra is able to use it naturally because of her unique heritage. This makes her an important weapon for Kefka, and an invaluable asset to the Returners, who are working to fight the Empire. In the end, this is the recipe for not only a classic Final Fantasy game, but also the formula for a classic JRPG.

I think it’s a shame to not have the chance to see what a full remake of FF6 could look like with a revamp on the level of FF7‘s remake, at least not anytime soon. Although they’re the beginning of the franchise, quite a few of the early games are only available as pixel remasters, if at all, and I know some players who prefer the realistic, high-quality graphics of modern games, not that I blame them for it. I love when games look great, too. However, I’d also love to see these great stories have new lives.

What The Future Of The Series Could Be

A Final Fantasy 9 remake seems like the most likely next move for Square Enix, and FF9 received love in the form of a reference in FFXIV: Dawntrail. I’m not surprised that it would be the next pick for a remake after FF7, either. It’s another beloved entry in the series, and I love it, too. I just think that it holds up well already, and it’d be great to see the older entries receive some attention, too. However, I imagine that the resources needed to remake the older games would be greater compared to giving FF9 a touch-up.

Remakes are all the rage right now, but not every game needs to be remade or remastered. On the other hand, games like FF7 have seen a huge influx of interest because of its remake, even if it’s a bit frustrating to buy three games at full price to see the entire story. However, remakes and remasters are a big trend right now, and even if FF9 is next in line after FF7, the catalog Square Enix has to pick from for remakes can seem endless. That means there are endless possibilities for the future, too.

My hopes for a FF6 remake may never come to fruition, but it’ll remain one of my favorite games in the franchise. If nothing else, I hope that more players will give at least the pixel remaster of it a try, if only to experience a truly classic Final Fantasy story and JRPG style game. Aside from that, I’ll be watching and waiting for more remakes to bring new life to the world of Final Fantasy, even if it’s not the exact world of Final Fantasy 6.
