Adolescence season 2 has received a major update from the show’s production studio after becoming one of Netflix’s most viewed series of all time. The miniseries follows the aftermath of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) murdering one of his classmates, focusing on the large-scale impact his crime causes while analyzing the social issues surrounding what he did. Adolescence received critical acclaim, while also quickly climbing Netflix’s overall charts, becoming the Number 4 most-watched English language series of all time as of writing. The show has also sparked political discussions in the UK about violence against women.

Now, according to DeadlinePlan B Entertainment is in early talks to produce a follow-up to Adolescence, which could become season 2 of the acclaimed miniseries. The production company’s co-presidents, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, are in talks with director Philip Barantini about the show’s possible continuation. However, if it does get renewed, it’s expected to follow a different story, while staying “true to its DNA,” according to Gardner.

What Adolescence Season 2 Would Mean For The Show

There Are Many Directions A Follow-Up Could Take

Adolescence season 1 ended with Jamie deciding to take responsibility for killing Katie (Emilia Holliday), calling his family to tell them he was changing his plea. This offered definitive closure to the story, while also still leaving room for the show to spark discussions among those who’ve viewed it. As for a follow-up, it’s unclear if it could continue focusing on issues pertaining to masculinity and misogyny, or if it would approach a different subject while retaining its one-shot episode format. For now, it seems no concrete details are going to be provided.

Even so, the show getting renewed for season 2 makes sense for Netflix to pursue, as the show has been in Netflix’s weekly Top 10 since the week it came out. While the cast of Adolescence would likely be different, as the main story has already wrapped up, it could still tackle similar themes, thus making itself just as valuable a social commentary as season 1 has been. The pursuit of another story might have even more of an impact on the UK as well, given how much the series has already sparked discussion about its themes in major ways.

Our Take On Adolescence Season 2’s Possible Renewal

It Makes Sense Given Season 1’s Success

Although season 2 hasn’t been confirmed yet as of writing, the fact it’s being pushed for by Plan B indicates it could be officially announced in the near future. Netflix is unlikely to pass up the opportunity to making a follow-up to one of their most popular series of all time, especially one that tackles such important, contemporary themes that have resonated globally. With the impact Adolescence has already had, seeing a new story in the same style, or even with similar themes, is a sensible next step for the show.
