Ghost of Tsushima tells one of the greatest samurai stories ever, seamlessly blending real-world Japanese history with creative fiction. Jin Sakai, the last remaining member of the Sakai Clan, comes from a noble line of samurai who ruled over Tsushima. His honor is tested when Mongol forces, led by Khotun Khan, invade the island, which forces Jin to abandon traditional samurai ideals to defend his home.

After his uncle, Lord Shimura, is captured, Jin charges in and challenges Khotun Khan honorably, only to suffer a crushing defeat. This loss forces Jin to reconsider his approach, which leads him to embrace the Ghost’s tactics and use stealth and unconventional methods to fight back.

A massive part of Ghost of Tsushima’s success comes from its phenomenal story, and Sucker Punch knows this. They’ll do everything they can to ensure Ghost of Yotei delivers a narrative just as impactful so that the studio can live up to the reputation they’ve built.

The only thing more engaging than a gripping story is entertaining gameplay, and that’s something Ghost of Tsushima delivers in spades. It immerses players in a stunning open world where something new and interesting can be found around every corner. That sense of discovery makes exploration all the more rewarding. The combat blends stealth and swordplay seamlessly, which is challenging at first but winds up being extremely satisfying once mastered.

The Ghost of Yotei reveal trailer gave players a few glimpses of gameplay, including new weapons, traversal mechanics, and the return of the iconic waypoint system, where the wind guides players to their destination. Ghost of Tsushima’s gameplay provides a fantastic foundation for Sucker Punch to build upon with the sequel.

Thanks to its many similarities, Ghost of Tsushima became the Assassin’s Creed fans had been begging for, delivering the open-world action-stealth game set in Japan they had always dreamed of. While Sucker Punch wasn’t necessarily trying to encroach on Ubisoft’s territory with Ghost of Tsushima, they’re directly challenging them this time with Ghost of Yotei.

Ubisoft has had a tough time in recent years, and they were hoping Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, which is set to release on March 20, 2025, would help turn things around. Now that Ghost of Yotei is also set to launch this year, Shadows is set to face some unexpected competition.

Ghost of Tsushima was a major milestone in the PlayStation 4’s life cycle, and many consider it a masterpiece that fully deserves all the praise it’s received. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that has kept fans returning to it and discussing it for nearly five years. Now, those same fans are eagerly watching for any updates on the sequel. Sucker Punch has set a high bar for itself, and now they have to meet those expectations. With an incredibly dedicated and passionate team behind it, Ghost of Yotei is poised to be another massive success and one of the most talked-about games of the year.
