MIDDLE-EARTH IS OFFICIALLY IN CRISIS: Is Stephen Colbert about to save the franchise or burn it to the ground? 🧙♂️🔥
Warner Bros. just dropped the ultimate bombshell: The next Lord of the Rings movie, “Shadow of the Past,” will be written by… late-night comedian Stephen Colbert. Yes, you read that right. The Shire has gone Hollywood.
The internet is absolutely imploding. While Colbert is known for his legendary Tolkien trivia skills, fans are terrified that a “talk show host” is taking the reigns of J.R.R. Tolkien’s sacred legacy. Is this a genius move from a true Lore Master, or a desperate DEI-infused publicity stunt by a studio that’s officially run out of ideas? The “purists” are already at war with the “Colbert stans,” and the Reddit threads are becoming a bloodbath. Between this and the zipper jackets, Lord of the Rings is looking more like a late-night sketch than an epic saga.

In a move that has left the Tolkien faithful either cheering or reaching for their pitchforks, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have announced that Stephen Colbert, the outgoing host of CBS’s The Late Show, will co-write the next installment of the Lord of the Rings franchise.
The film, titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, marks a radical departure for the multi-billion dollar IP. Colbert will script the project alongside his son, Peter McGee, and franchise veteran Philippa Boyens. While Colbert has long touted his “Encyclopedic knowledge” of Middle-earth, critics are questioning whether a comedian can handle the weight of the world’s most beloved high-fantasy saga.
A “Fan Boy” in the Writer’s Room
The announcement came via a social media video featuring Peter Jackson, who introduced Colbert as his “very special partner.” According to the release, the film will focus on the “lost chapters” of The Fellowship of the Ring—sections like the Old Forest and the Fog on the Barrow-downs—which were famously cut from Jackson’s original 2001 masterpiece.
“I thought: ‘Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story,'” Colbert said in the video, appearing noticeably giddy. “Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies?”
The logline confirms the film is set 14 years after Frodo’s departure, following Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace their steps, while Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers a secret that could have cost the original Fellowship the war.
“The Franchise is Cooked”
However, not everyone is buying the “super-fan” credentials. On Reddit and X, the “Not My Middle-Earth” crowd is sounding the alarm.
“Colbert is a fan, not a fantasy writer. This is an ego trip of Balrog proportions,” wrote one user on r/lotr. “Warner Bros. is just using his name to distract from the fact that they are milking this IP until there’s nothing left but dry bones.”
Others pointed to Colbert’s lack of experience in big-budget screenwriting. While his late-night monologues are Emmy-winning, skeptics argue that writing political satire is a far cry from crafting the elevated, archaic prose required for Tolkien’s universe.
“We’ve seen what happens when ‘enthusiastic fans’ get hold of franchises—look at Disney’s Star Wars or Amazon’s Rings of Power,” said culture critic Thomas Vance. “The fear is that Colbert will inject his own modern sensibilities and humor into a world that should remain timeless and somber.”
The “Tom Bombadil” Problem
The biggest lightning rod for controversy remains the potential inclusion of Tom Bombadil. The whimsical character was omitted from the original trilogy for being a “pacing killer.” Now, with Colbert at the helm—a man who has spent years defending Bombadil’s importance—purists fear the movie will become a 100-minute musical interlude.
“If we get 40 minutes of Tom Bombadil singing to a pony, the franchise is officially cooked,” one viral tweet read.
Studio Strategy or Desperation?
Warner Bros. reportedly needs a new Lord of the Rings movie in development every few years to maintain its licensing agreement. With Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum already in production for a 2027 release, Shadow of the Past is clearly part of an aggressive expansion.
Industry insiders suggest the hiring of Colbert is a strategic move to “humanize” the reboot process. By bringing in a celebrity who is universally recognized as a “Tolkien Stan,” the studio hopes to bridge the gap between cynical older fans and a new audience.
Colbert, who is set to air his final episode of The Late Show in May 2026, seems unfazed by the noise. “You know what the books mean to me,” he told Jackson. “I’ve been mentally writing this for 30 năm.”
Whether Colbert’s “Shadow of the Past” will be a poetic tribute to the Professor or a late-night disaster remains to be seen. But in the world of Hollywood, one does not simply hire a talk-show host without sparking a war.
Production is expected to begin in New Zealand later this year. For now, the only thing certain is that for the first time in years, the Eye of Sauron—and the internet—is fixed squarely on Stephen Colbert.
