In a move that has left the Tolkien faithful either cheering or reaching for their pitchforks, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have announced that Stephen Colbert, the outgoing host of CBS’s The Late Show, will co-write the next installment of the Lord of the Rings franchise.

The film, titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, marks a radical departure for the multi-billion dollar IP. Colbert will script the project alongside his son, Peter McGee, and franchise veteran Philippa Boyens.
