Eagle-eyed Ghost of Yotei players have noticed a small detail that seemingly confirms once and for all which ending in Ghost of Tsushima was canon.
Considering Jin’s relationship with his uncle, that choice might seem like an easy one, but Tsushima’s approach to honour and the samurai code ends up making it much tougher in the end. Sucker Punch has flip-flopped on confirming which of the endings of Tsushima is canon, but there’s a small detail in Yotei that acts as our best evidence yet.
A Small Detail In Ghost Of Yotei Might Confirm Which Tsushima Ending Is Canon
Pay Attention To The Red Leaves
As you probably know by now, Ghost of Yotei has a side quest that lets Atsu visit Jin Sakai’s home in Ezo and even see his grave, which lets you acquire his Storm Sword and Ghost mask. That’s already a great easter egg for fans, but there’s a small detail to Jin’s grave that makes it even more interesting.
Over on the Ghost subreddit, StrongWafer2631 asked fans what they think Tsushima’s canon ending is now that we know how Jin’s story ends and where he ended up. Almost all of the comments agree that Jin spared his uncle, but mrblonde55 points out that Yotei even suggests this too since Jin’s grave is covered in red leaves.
That might not seem like an important detail, but those red leaves are a symbolic part of the ending where Jin spares his uncle, so their appearance at his grave might be a subtle hint at Tsushima’s canon ending. It could also just be a reference to the red leaves and tree that appeared in Jin and Shimura’s final fight, but most fans have taken it more as a hint towards the canon.
There’s also the fact that Jin fled from Tsushima following the events of that game, which QuietSync thinks is because he’s running from the people hunting him for sparing his uncle dishonourably.
Sucker Punch has previously given a few mixed messages about which Tsushima ending is canon. Game director Nate Fox said that sparing him is the canon ending in the past, before noting that both endings are valid in Yotei, so it’s a little confusing overall. The red leaves do suggest which of the two outcomes is the one that Sucker Punch is going for, though.
