Itâs now been several weeks since Ginny & Georgia (finally) returned to our screens after an extended hiatus, with the show being impacted by the Hollywood strikes of 2023. We wonât be waiting quite as long for season 4, which is currently in active development, with a planned shoot for later this summer. In the past few days, showrunner Sarah Lampert has revealed some interesting tidbits about the showâs development and what we can expect going into season 4.
In a new interview with Popternative, Lampert opened up about cliffhangers, character growth, and how fan reactions are helping shape the future of the Netflix hit. A few of the headlines:
Season 4 is currently in the writersâ room (it began earlier this year) and is already halfway through development.
Lampert confirms she knows who Georgiaâs babyâs father is, but isnât telling.
The team plans to take a pause to integrate fan reactions directly into the story.
Lampert began by reflecting on the journey thus far, expressing how she has undergone a similar creative evolution alongside her characters. She described how each season has brought its own unique emotional experience. Season 1, she admitted, caught her off guard. The sudden release into the world and the whirlwind of attention was overwhelming, and she hadnât anticipated how intense the response would be. By Season 2, Lampert felt more grounded and confident in her role. âI had a little thicker skin,â she explained, adding that she fully leaned into the experience. On the night of the premiere, she spent hours on Twitter watching fans react in real-time to specific episodes and plot twists. She described it as âone of the more fun nightsâ of her career.
Season 3, however, was on a whole new level. Lampert said the âfervor for the show was at an all-time high,â with fans posting countdowns and building massive anticipation. Rather than feeling pressure, she embraced it. Her favorite part, she shared, is when the show finally leaves her hands and belongs to the audience. After years of obsessing over tiny details, like which shirt a character should wear or which song should play in a scene, she finds joy in watching the world respond. âI protect it from each stage,â she said, âand then I get to just give it to the world.â
Speaking about the end of Season 3, which concluded with several major developments, most notably, Georgiaâs pregnancy reveal and Ginny continuing to process the truth about her motherâs past, Lampert emphasized that these moments arenât just dramatic twists, but foundational shifts in the emotional lives of the characters. She called them âlife-changing cliffhangersâ that will directly shape the story moving forward. âGinny finding out her mom is a murderer changes that world for that character,â she said. âGeorgia getting arrested changes the world for that character. And then, you know, Georgia finding out sheâs pregnant⌠that changes the world for the character.â (Note: Georgiaâs arrest occurred at the end of Season 2.)

Moving on to whatâs coming next, Lampert provided an update on the writing process, saying, âIâm halfway through the writerâs room with the writers right now. Iâm doing this, and I should be in the writerâs room right now.â You may recall that we recently received word that filming is scheduled to take place sometime in Summer 2025, with a planned wrap in February 2026. Although not confirmed here, it suggests things are moving rapidly.
Naturally, one of the biggest fan questions coming out of the Season 3 finale is the identity of the father of Georgiaâs baby. Lampert confirmed she knows who it is but isnât revealing the answer. She brought the decision into the writersâ room, presenting her original choice and encouraging the team to consider alternatives. After weighing different outcomes and debating the ripple effects for each possible candidate, the team briefly changed course, only to return to Lampertâs initial pick. âSo itâs who I originally wanted it to be,â she said.
Looking ahead, Lampert didnât reveal specific storylines for Season 4 but expressed excitement about the direction the show is heading. She said the writersâ room is energized, and she feels creatively inspired by the people around her. And while fans are eager for answers, sheâs equally committed to letting the story unfold with care and emotional honesty.
Another interesting detail Lampert shared was just how seriously the team takes fan reactions. The writers are planning to take a dedicated break from story work to discuss the online response to Season 3. âWeâre going to take Monday to stop, not push story forward, and really talk about all of the commentary and the reactions to season three,â she said, explaining that even though they began outlining Season 4 before the premiere, theyâve made space to reflect on fan commentary across Twitter, Reddit, and TikTok.
She added that her background in theater taught her to embrace both praise and criticism. âI think it makes my work better,â she said. âIt makes me think deeper about things.â Rather than retreating from public discourse, Lampert welcomes it. âI love both the good and the bad. It forces me to reevaluate the choices that I made, and sometimes double down on them and sometimes change them.â
