David Corenswet, in Superman, is stepping into a role that he understands very well, and holds an admiration for Henry Cavill’s take on the character.
David Corenswet’s journey to becoming the new Superman has been the talk of the entertainment world since James Gunn announced Superman. The Hollywood star’s casting did receive initial criticism, but James Gunn has largely stuck to his guns, and recent comments have increased the hype for Corenswet’s iteration of the character.
Regardless, while Corenswet will be seen for the first time as the superhero in July 2025, he has been a fan of the character for many a year. As a matter of fact, back in 2019, he had some precious words for the character, back when Henry Cavill held the mantle of the iconic godlike superhero.

David Corenswet is stepping into Superman’s iconic boots after Henry Cavill’s dark and brooding interpretation. While Cavill’s portrayal in Zack Snyder’s DC Universe was widely acclaimed, Corenswet has made it clear he wants to pivot back to the character’s optimistic roots. In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet said,
I would love to see somebody do a really upbeat throwback. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take. I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.
This direction aligns with Gunn’s approach for Superman: Legacy, which will focus on Clark Kent’s dual life as a journalist at the Daily Planet and his role as Earth’s protector.
“Superman is an amazing character, a classic American character. He’s been done right and he’s been done wrong. It’s time for another right one.”

Corenswet is now set to produce this upbeat take on the character on his very own, and he appears to understand what he is getting into, very well.

Corenswet’s admiration for Superman runs deep. Calling him a “classic American character,” he acknowledged that the character has been both “done right” and “done wrong” in the past. Further, he appeared to have a clear direction about any future iteration of Superman:
The cool thing about Superman is the thing that everybody says is the problem with the character, which is that he’s invincible. That’s the most interesting thing about him. What a difficult position for a person to be in. There’s so much to be mined there and deal with the drama that’s inherent in somebody who doesn’t have any problems and can’t die.
He also had words on how he would like to see the character being done in the future:
It should start with Lois Lane. And then Superman can just come in as the love interest.
While information about the contents of the upcoming movie has been kept under wraps, Rachel Brosnahan will be seen as his love interest, Lois Lane. Further, characters such as Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Hawk Girl (Isabela Merced), alongside Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, set up a narrative that appears well in line with Corenswet’s expectations.
Superman will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
