Hogwarts Legacy Story DLC Canceled, Would Have Released Alongside Long-Rumored Definitive Edition, According To Report

Warner Brothers has canceled a previously planned DLC for Hogwarts Legacy, according to a new report. The DLC release was planned to coincide with the game’s rumored Definitive Edition, which would have combined all content created for Hogwarts Legacy.

Bloomberg reported that the DLC release was scrapped due to cost concerns, with Warner Brothers executives fearing players would find the amount of DLC content lacking for the price. The DLC was being developed by Rocksteady Studios in cooperation with Avalanche Software, Hogwarts Legacy‘s original developer. This is just the most recent in a string of cancelations by Warner Bros., as a planned Wonder Woman game was scratched during studio closures and restructuring in February 2025.

While specifics have been kept under wraps, the DLC was said to contain a new storyline about companions that was removed from the original Hogwarts Legacy game, perhaps due to time, plot, or mechanical limitations. The companions in Hogwarts Legacy included an assortment of Hogwarts students and professors, who each offered their own side quests as players progressed through the story.

Hogwarts Legacy faced calls for boycotts from some fans unhappy with comments made by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling against the LGBTQ+ communities, particularly transgender individuals. The franchise has also had longstanding criticism for purportedly perpetuating anti-semitic tropes and for controversial plotlines surrounding the enslavement of in-universe house elves.

Despite this, Hogwarts Legacy was a critical success, and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, becoming 2023’s best-selling game. It was also nominated for Game of the Year and won Best Game on Steam Deck at the Steam Awards, with fans considering the game’s lack of Game of the Year nominations outside of Steam a snub.

Our Take: Warner Bros. Could Be Focusing On The Next Hogwarts Legacy Game

New Harry Potter Content Seems Inevitable

Hogwarts Legacy fans will have to wait for further news on what Warner Brothers plans to do with the property. While the expected DLC is no more, fans may get to see its content recycled into future Harry Potter games. Warner Brothers has already stated it plans to focus on its bigger franchises, including Harry PotterGame of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat, rather than develop content for lesser-known games and riskier properties.

In 2024, the studio announced that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy would be one of its main focuses heading into the future. The DLC cancelation may indicate the studio already has a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy in development, though any plans for the storyline, characters, and timeline are being kept under lock and key. Harry Potter’s popularity isn’t going anywhere, and it’s only a matter of time before players will get the chance to return to Hogwarts.
