“I Don’t Have Three Hands”: Popular Oblivion Remastered Mod Rebinds Important Key So “Humans” Can Use It

Oblivion Remastered characters standing in front of screenshots from the game One modder seeks to improve The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered user experience simply by remapping one important key from the game’s control scheme. The remake was shadow dropped last week, reviving the classic old title and bringing it to a new audience looking new and improved thanks to Unreal Engine 5. The remaster wasn’t just visual, of course, upgrading many aspects of the game that may seem outdated today, including combat tweaks, an improved UI, new voice acting, and much more.

Not every decision that the Bethesda team made in transforming the game into its new version is equally loved by the fans, though. Modder slowpard on Nexus Mods set out to remedy one feature of Oblivion Remastered that just didn’t make sense to them: Pressing “Enter” to confirm.

The mod makes one very simple but important change in the title, changing the “Enter” key needed to confirm and select things to the more intuitive Space bar or letter E. It was uploaded earlier today and already has over 3,000 downloads, showing this to be a popular enough issue to need a fix.

Oblivion Remastered Mod Makes Selecting And Confirming More Intuitive

There’s No Need To Grow An Extra Hand For Pressing Enter

Oblivion is a PC game, generally played with a mouse and keyboard. This, of course, means that the standard PC gaming control scheme applies here, such as using WASD to move and the mouse to look around. Unfortunately, this leaves players with no easy way to press the “Enter” key, which is far from the location of both hands. Even more unfortunately, the game gives players no option to change this odd choice of a keybind.

The creator of the “Press Space To Confirm” mod writes that they “have no idea what prompted Virtuos,” the developer who assisted Bethesda on this remaster, “to bind all confirm/skip/select actions in menus to Enter.” Having to press Enter means either having to remove one of the hands from its natural location or to grow a third hand, and the mod’s creator laments: “I don’t have three hands.” Lucky for players, slowpard’s quick and simple fix rebinds the offending key to the more natural E or Space bar, so that “Now humans can use the keyboard to navigate.

No Mod Support For Oblivion Remastered Hasn’t Stopped Modders

Oblivion Remastered doesn’t officially have mod support on launch, although Bethesda is historically known for being friendly with the modding community. This has done little to stop modders from adding their own spin to the title and updating aspects they want to change.

At the time of this writing, there are nearly 1,000 mods available for download and use from Nexus Mods, despite the game only being out for a week. The mods do everything from tweaking the visuals to changing the entire quest rewards system, providing fans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered the freedom to customize the game to their needs. Bethesda may add mod support at a later date, and it may even rebind the Enter key officially, if these seems to be enough demand for it. Until then, slowpard’s fix will work in a pinch.
