‘I Was Tearing Up’: Superman & Lois Stars Reveal Their Reactions to How the Story Ended

Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane stand in profile in front of a rubble strewn street from Superman and LoisTyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch are glad Superman & Lois‘ bittersweet ending stayed true to their characters’ love for one another.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly after the series finale “It Went By So Fast” aired, both leads talked about the story’s decision to show Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s remaining 32 years as a couple until their respective deaths. While Tulloch hoped Max would pick the final Arrowverse show up for more seasons, she ultimately felt the finale was “beautiful” and reflected on her reaction to Lois’ death scene after her breast cancer made a return.

“When I read the script, I was tearing up, and then I was tearing up even more when I was filming it and watching Tyler’s stuff,” Tulloch said, adding, “I think the fans love this iteration of Lois and Clark because there’s no worry or hesitation or concern about whether or not they’re madly in love with each other. The foundation of their relationship was incredibly strong and remains so throughout all kinds of obstacles that they had to overcome, both as far as fighting monsters like Doomsday and Lex Luthor, and also fighting with their hormonal teenagers. There’s never been a question about their love for each other and their dedication to one another.”

When I read the script, I was tearing up, and then I was tearing up even more when I was filming it and watching Tyler’s stuff.

Hoechlin also loved how the finale brought Superman & Lois‘ family theme full circle, recalling, “When we first specifically started doing this Superman and Lois, they really were the focus. Also, I was at a point in my life where I was coming to that realization — family had always been very, very important, but it got emphasized with COVID where everything in the world stopped except for the relationships that we had with people. To wrap the show up on that note was very fitting. I’m really happy that that was what we leaned into.”

They did, however, wish more actors like Dylan Walsh — who played Lois’ dad, Sam Lane — could have appeared if not for budget cuts, though a golden retriever version of Superman’s dog Krypto did cameo in the finale.

Along with Lois’ death, “It Went By So Fast” concluded with Clark’s second death after the human heart used to revive him in season 4 expired after several decades. The series capped off Hoechlin’s time as the Arrowverse’s Superman since 2016, first appearing in Supergirl season 2 and returning for various crossover specials before getting his spinoff. Had it continued for more seasons, showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher would have wanted to introduce Brainiac and Darkseid as future villains, with the former semi-cameoing as one of Lex Luthor’s henchmen.
