According to a Tweet by Nate The Hate, a Final Fantasy 9 remake is still “in active development” as of February 2025. This corroborates ongoing rumors surrounding an FF9 remake, appearing to confirm, despite Square’s recent silence, that something of the sort is still in the works. As a rumor mill, Nate has a pretty good track record; he most recently predicted the Switch 2’s reveal on January 16, which turned out to be true.
Final Fantasy 9 Remake Allegedly Still In Development, Sources Say
FF9 Remake Could Be Out In 2026
Both remain in active development. FFIXR isn’t expected to see release in 2025. Maybe we’ll see it launch in 2026. — NateTheHate2 (@NateTheHate2) February 9, 2025
We don’t know a whole lot beyond the many rumors of an FF9 remake, which last popped up in June 2024. This update seemed to affirm that Square itself was still working on the FF9 remake, despite rumors that it had outsourced the project, or canceled it amid a spate of scrapped projects after games like FF7 Rebirth fell short of sales expectations. Nate The Hate’s latest update holds that nothing’s changed – Square is still working on FF9, allegedly.
But it could be a while until we get our hands on it. Nate says that an FF9 remake isn’t expected to be released this year. If his report is true, it sounds like Square has no idea as to when the FF9 remake might be ready for launch. There may be some hope for a 2026 release, but nothing is guaranteed.
A Final Fantasy Tactics Remake Might Also Be Coming In The Future
FF Tactics Might Need A Remake More Than FF9

It’s enough to know that an FF9 remake is coming, even if it is far in the future. But perhaps more excitingly, Nate The Hate also claims that there’s a Final Fantasy Tactics remake in the works, too. This has also been rumored for quite some time, and is arguably FF9 is one of my favorites in the series, but I’d rather see Tactics remade (or at least remastered) first for one simple reason: it’s not available on most modern platforms.
If I wanted to, I could purchase and play FF9 on PS5, PC, Switch, or even Xbox today. But if I wanted to play Tactics, I could only download it on my smartphone, and that’s far from ideal. I’d love to be able to play an HD version on the big screen, or even take it on the go with a Switch or Steam Deck-compatible version. Still, I’d be just as thrilled for a Final Fantasy 9 remake, especially if it preserved the original turn-based combat – it’s just a matter of what Square Enix decides to put out first.
