“It’s just not authentic”: Naoe Voice Actor From Assassin’s Creed Shadows Was Stunned By a Controversial Action That Ubisoft Thankfully Patched Out

Assassin’s Creed Shadows sparked controversy over sacred shrines, but Ubisoft’s quick patch fortunately saved the day before it got out of hand.

It is only seen ever so rarely when a game’s voice actor shows any discomfort with what’s going on inside their game. But as usual, it seems to be just another day in the life of Ubisoft and the ever-growing controversy with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Fortunately enough, the studio was able to step in and shut it down before it got way too out of hand.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, ever since its announcement, has been under fire for a number of things. One of these was how sacred shrines, or rather the sacred items kept inside them, were made to be destroyable in-game.

This is something even the voice actor of Naoe, one of the main protagonists of the game, has spoken against. As mentioned earlier, Ubisoft was quick enough to introduce a fix and deliver a patch that took away the ability to destroy these sacred items from players.

Yet another blow to Assassin’s Creed Shadows that Ubisoft absorbed before any real impact

It is commendable how, despite the said controversies, the game is doing well for itself, crossing millions of active players in just a short while. Part of the reason why is because an Assassin’s Creed game set in Feudal Japan was a long time pending, and gamers possibly wanted to give it a try nonetheless.

However, that does not keep the studio safe from any fire. In a conversation with Insider Gaming, Masumi Tsunoda, the voice actress for Naoe, stated the following regarding the destroyable shrines in the game.

As Japanese, we grow up with the whole shrine, sacred mirrors, all of that – and I saw in the game that those are destroyable, and those things just do not happen. Watching that kind of hurts my heart a little bit. You’re able to do some things in the game that you would just never, ever, ever be able to do in Japan, and those do hurt me. It’s just not authentic to be able to do something like that.

The VA states how it was hurtful to see the sacred shrines being made destructible in the game. She goes over how it is not ‘authentic’ at all to be able to do something as significant as this, as it could never be done in real life.

Ubisoft’s unexpected success with Assassin’s Creed Shadows: And what’s to come next

The quick day-one patch released by Ubisoft for their latest venture has been crucial in ensuring its success. After nearly drowning itself to oblivion, the studio is slowly climbing its way back to the top, partially thanks to Tencent Games.

After a huge €1.16 billion investment from Tencent, the studio behind the Assassin’s Creed franchise will now be handing off its control to a subsidiary studio, along with other popular IPs of Far Cry and Rainbow Six.

While this takes a chunk of control right out of Ubisoft’s hands, it also means a better-utilized potential of these IPs moving forward. Assassin’s Creed Shadows has proven to be a major success on its own, and only time will tell if the franchise will be able to keep up in the future.
