The acclaimed Japanese developer reflects on the evolution of video game creation and the success of Sandfall Interactive.

As video games have grown over the past 30 years, so have their development teams. Industry veteran Hideo Kojima has been a witness to how these teams can grow over time, becoming larger than one would expect. Given the recent success of Sandfall Interactive with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and its supposedly small team, Kojima comes up with a new reflection on the industry.

During a Q&A session, Kojima shared his thoughts on how the industry has evolved and how, despite preferring smaller teams, his own studio, Kojima Productions, has grown significantly, reaching over 200 developers. This led him to mention Sandfall Interactive, and how with a relatively small team he achieved one of the successes of 2025.

They only have like 33 team members and a dog. That’s my ideal when I create something with a team,” commented Kojima. “Creation has now become much bigger. It’s kind of a war between how efficient you could [be] with the small team, but you have to make it so grand.”

The myth of the small team at Sandfall Interactive

Despite the comments made by Kojima, it should be remembered that there is a debate about the true size of the team behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While the studio does have between 30 and 40 team members (and of course, a dog), the credits reveal a lot of outside work on the animationQAcapture and even music, reaching into the hundreds of people. Although it is smaller than what we can find in many AAA games, saying that only about 30 people worked on the project is incorrect.

Kojima’s next game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is set to release on June 26 exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
