As is always the case in RPGs, combat can reap massive benefits, with players fighting to survive and getting rewarded in the process. Those who continue to throw themselves into the throes of war in Persona 5 Royal will see their EXP points totting up very quickly. Thus, players who don’t mind finding themselves in the thick of the action should take some time to research how to best hit hard, as defeating the variety of Shadows on offer will ultimately add to that EXP.

The game features Palaces, which act as the dungeons for the title. These locations hold all kinds of challenges, with more and more powerful enemies standing in the way. Defeating these dungeons or palaces might be difficult, but it’s a task worth taking on. Because the further the player progresses, the more EXP they’ll be able to pick up.

There are technically nine dungeons to work through, although only seven of them are actually considered to be palaces. Naturally, boss battles can’t be avoided, so players should be prepared to gain that bonus once they have survived these encounters. However, post-game there is The Reaper to consider as the next opponent, a particularly powerful enemy that will drop a huge amount of EXP when defeated.

Perhaps at that stage of the game, players don’t need a boost, since they’ve made it that far after all. But for those looking for a late-stage surge, The Reaper is a great boss battle to expand with. Players will have to really buff out their team’s defenses and power if they are to stand a chance against this near-impossible foe since it is a level 85 enemy.

There are a couple of different locations where players may study, whether that be the diner, school, or even the library. But it will also add to their EXP points as well long-term, if the player knows how to use the benefits of the skills they gain to their advantage. Considering a huge portion of the title is focused on high school students, it makes perfect sense that actually getting involved in lessons is a way of gaining that much-needed experience.

Players simply have to attend class on weekdays, and there they will be asked questions by the teacher. Answering them correctly will improve the student’s standing, and ultimately help in building their EXP long-term and general points in the short run. The more knowledge a player can build, the more this will impact other dynamics in the game, like key relationships. All of this will continue strengthening the player character, leading to an easier time building EXP.

Some of the questions in Persona 5 Royal are actually different compared to the original Persona 5, so players who have played the original title and think that they should be able to get by smoothly this time around are sadly mistaken. What’s more, because the game boasts additional content, there will be more opportunities to attend school and gain points to ultimately aid in building EXP.

Working can also be a critical way of building EXP, but again it will not be a direct approach. Players will still need patience, just like with their schooling, because working a job does not provide EXP, but will give opportunities to do so long-term. The Team Glasses are an excellent example of an easy-to-use item with an instant benefit. Players who equip the accessory will find that their EXP is actually boosted in combat.

Team Glasses ultimately increases EXP by 15%, which is an absolute game-changer for those who find themselves battling fairly regularly. But such a product is not easy to access, and players will have to hunt out the Team Glasses to be able to see how they make a difference and must download them with a free DLC. Team Glasses do not stack if multiple characters have them, but that’s really the only drawback.

The Expedite Ring works in much the same way, but players should not expect such an impactful shift. In this case, the accessory only adds a 1.5 boost to the EXP gained. It’s not a significant amount, but it’s enough to make a difference. The ring is a reward after a Mementos encounter with Caroline and Justine. It’s only available in the title once, and so cannot be missed. The sooner players can access this particular piece of kit, the better, as it will enhance all the other strategies in play.

Personas also gain EXP in battle when they are equipped, even if they aren’t actually used. However, specific Personas can learn the passive skill growth, which is exactly what players need to be looking out for. Growth sees Personas gain EXP when inactive, with three levels to the skill. The first level sees Personas gain a quarter of the EXP, the second level sees them earn half, and the final level allows them to take the full EXP. Again, the quicker a Persona can progress to that stage, the easier it will be to build EXP.

Players need to commit to utilizing these Personas in gameplay, but the most important things to be mindful of are Izanagi​​​​​​​, Izanagi Picaro​​​​​​​, Raphael, and Narcissus because they can access the highest level of growth. Players simply need to level these characters to be able to access these useful abilities.

It’s the kind of title that requires a huge amount of time and energy put into it, to be able to really open up. The developers have thought long and hard about how the game has been balanced, and EXP is a key part of that. Just like getting a job or going to school, each activity completed in the title will keep the player moving towards leveling up their experience and thus gaining EXP.

It’s not always a linear path to do so, but there is logic in the chaos. Taking on new side quests, pushing to explore where possible, and looking for those key opportunities will place players in a position to keep earning EXP.
