Firstly, it is confirmed that the Overture DLC will be coming later this summer and that it will serve as a prequel DLC to the story of Lies of P. Heading back in time, Pinocchio will get to explore Krat, as well as some other new locations, in the days leading up to the brutal puppet massacre, leaving players to wonder if it’s better to play Overture first, and if it’s even possible to do so.
Yes, The Base Game Is Required To Play Overture DLC
Despite Being A Prequel, Overture Cannot Be Played Before Lies Of P

Since this is not a standalone title, players will unfortunately not have the freedom to choose which they would like to play first. Per the official teaser trailer that was showcased during PlayStation’s February 2025 State of Play, the base game will be required to play Overture. Furthermore, even if the option to play it first was available to players, it wouldn’t be recommended to do so.

Those Who Have Yet To Pick Up Lies Of P Still Have Time
Since there are still a few months before Overture drops this summer, there’s plenty of time for anyone hoping to play it to finish Lies of P. As stated, the base game will be required to play the DLC, but more than that, it will likely only be accessible in a mid-late game area. This means that simply buying Lies of P will likely not be enough to play the DLC and at least partial progress will need to be made.
That being said, it’s still recommended that the entire base game be finished before moving on as it will not only add to the story of Overture but help prepare for it. FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games have a history of their DLCs being significantly more challenging than the base game, and this Soulslike is expected to be no different, since Lies of P is arguably the best non-FromSoft take on the subgenre. Therefore, if you play through the DLC midway through Lies of P, there will likely be a noticeable decline in difficulty once returning to finish the rest of the game, detracting from the overall experience.
All in all, the Summer 2025 release date for Overture gives players plenty of time to play or replay Lies of P while waiting, and it’s expected that more details will continue to unfold in the coming months, further building the anticipation for this exciting prequel DLC.
