The sudden passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in a car accident has shocked and devastated the global football community. Not only was Jota a close teammate, but he was also a great friend to Luis Díaz — a player whom Jota supported wholeheartedly when Díaz’s father was kidnapped. However, contrary to the expectations of fans and teammates, the Colombian forward’s reaction to Jota’s passing has stirred anger and disappointment among the online community.
When Jota tragically passed away, Luiz Díaz posted a heartfelt series of photos with his teammate and shared a deep message: “I don’t know what to say anymore… It’s heartbreaking. Not only because of what he did on the field, but also because of the person he was off the field. There are gestures that people will never forget, and Diogo once made a gesture to me that I will carry with me for life. I send my arms to Rute, his three children, and his family. May Diogo and André rest in peace.”
However, despite the outpouring of condolences and tributes from Liverpool players, management, and fans, Luis Díaz chose not to attend Jota’s funeral. Instead, he was spotted at a private party with influencers in his home country of Colombia. This led many to feel that Díaz was indifferent and aloof in the face of such a profound loss for both the club and his friends. The contrast between his behavior online and in real life only fueled the backlash against him.
Díaz’s post about mourning Jota received a lot of attention, but the majority of the interactions were negative, as fans expressed their disappointment. Many pointed out that while Jota had once made a beautiful gesture for him when Díaz’s father was kidnapped, Díaz failed to reciprocate when given the opportunity.
“An excellent champion, but chose to be with fame-seeking influencers rather than attend the funeral of the person who welcomed him into the team, the one who had a warm gesture towards his father. Yet, when the chance came, he didn’t return the favor. Family is important, but sometimes you need to say ‘no’ to certain things. You were having fun with your dad and brother, forgetting the gesture from Diogo. Where were your parents, wife, children, and common sense in all of this? It’s not mandatory to attend, but it’s an ethical responsibility,” wrote one fan.
“I thought at least you would come to do something simple yet meaningful — offer condolences, show affection and respect for your friend and his family, who also welcomed you… This isn’t the time to give football interviews,” another commented.
“Diogo Jota once made a beautiful gesture towards you, supporting you when your father was kidnapped, and yet you chose to stay behind to do an interview about football with La Liendra… This hurts us deeply because as Colombians, we hoped you would support someone who stood by you. With the person you’ve shown yourself to be, we expected more. I say this with all respect.”
Other fans also expressed their frustration, questioning how an influencer event could be more important than attending a teammate’s funeral.
Currently, Luis Díaz has not made any official statement regarding the incident. However, his image has been significantly damaged in the eyes of Liverpool fans and the Colombian football community — both of whom had high expectations for the bond and friendship between Díaz and Diogo Jota.
