The Marvel Cinematic Universe might be family-friendly, but its source, aka the Marvel Comics, has never shied away from pushing boundaries when it comes to being brutal and raw. Over the many editions and iterations of some of our favorite comic book characters, Marvel Comics has crossed certain lines when it comes to their most powerful characters.

One of these most shocking examples is Fantastic Four: House of M (2005), which showcased such a brutal version of Magneto that the MCU would never dare to adapt now that Sir Ian McKellen is officially debuting in the MCU in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

One of the most brutal Marvel Comics involving Doctor Doom and Magneto

Marvel Comics’ crossover event, Fantastic Four: House of M (2005) by John Layman and Scot Eaton, was one of the most interesting, yet brutal iterations. In this said reality, Magneto isn’t just a militant leader but is portrayed as the ruler of the world, with mutants having the upper hand. However, Victor Von Doom, who is known to submit to no one, is forced to perform tasks for Magneto.

However, when Doom retaliates, trapping Magneto in a prison, the mutant gets help from ‘It’, aka Ben Grimm, whom Doom has been keeping as a pet, imprisoned like a wild animal, all this time. While Doom plans to declare himself as the ruler, remarking that the House of Doom will rise from the ashes of the House of M, Magneto comes back and does the unthinkable.

The mutant brutally executed Doom’s entire family: his wife Valeria, who was now Invincible Woman, and his son Kristoff, the Inhuman Torch. This wasn’t just an attack on Doom’s loved one but a calculated one to break the unbreakable man. After killing his entire family, Magneto proceeds to imprison Doom and subjects him to relentless torture, both psychological and physical, ensuring that one of Marvel’s most fearsome and fan-favorite villains is left broken and powerless.

MCU can never go this dark with Ian McKellen and Robert Downey Jr.

Marvel Studios took everyone by surprise when it aired a surprise, more-than-five-hours-long casting announcement video for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Confirming several of our favorite Avengers, the video also featured names of several X-Men, officially confirming the mutants’ arrival in the MCU. One of these names is Sir Ian McKellen, aka Magneto.

Despite the arrival of Magneto in the MCU and Robert Downey Jr. being Doctor Doom, the Marvel Cinematic Universe can never adapt the brutal Marvel Comics event mentioned above. Since the comic book verse has a tendency to tone down dark storylines, we might never see an event as brutal as this. Moreover, the House of M storyline in WandaVision was heavily reworked, stripping away the main theme.

While McKellen is yet to offer comments about his MCU debut, Patrick Stewart, aka Professor X (who has already had his MCU cameo and will be reprising his role in Doomsday), had remarked to ET Online in 2023 that the two co-stars had some surprising plans in the works regarding MCU.

Apart from McKellen and Stewart, other X-Men confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday are as follows: James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. Well, needless to say, we can hardly wait to see them return, only this time in the MCU.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theatres on May 1, 2026.
