Marvel officially teases 'hardcore' MCU sequel we've waited years for

The sequel to this 2021 MCU series is going to be as gory as we hoped

The sequel to a 2021 MCU series is inbound, and the showrunner has already revealed that it’s only suitable viewing for those aged 18 and up.

We recently received a bunch of updates regarding a few upcoming MCU series that are about to debut on Disney+ later this year, in a press release from The Walt Disney Company.

The “Marvel Animation 2025 Preview” focused on new series such as Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Eyes of Wakanda, and (perhaps most importantly) Marvel Zombies.

There were a couple of huge pieces of info buried in the press release, but the biggest bit confirmed something a lot of folks had been theorising for a long time: Marvel Zombies is going to serve as a proper sequel to the fifth episode of What If…? – “What If… Zombies?!”

“Brad [Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television] and Kevin [Feige] loved the What If…? episode so much. They were like, ‘We need more zombies! They said, ‘Let’s do a sequel to that episode — but let’s do four episodes, like a mini-movie event.’ So, we’re upping the ante,” revealed Marvel Zombies showrunner Bryan Andrews.

The other big piece of info is in regards to ratings classification for the show, which more than implies that the series will be a hell of a lot gorier than most of the MCU shows that have come before it.

“It’s TV-MA, so we don’t have to pull punches,” Andrew continued, “We can be a little bit more hardcore. We go for the throat — no pun intended. It’s pretty wild, pretty out there.”

For us folks in the UK, TV-MA essentially equates to somewhere between a 15 and an 18 rating over here. TV ratings in the USA are more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule, but a TV-MA rating implies that it may not be suitable for those aged 17 and under.

If you want an MCU comparison, then the original three series of the Netflix MCU show Daredevil were all rated TV-MA.

Thankfully that means it’s fair to say that this one will be as gory as we hoped. I mean, come on, there wouldn’t exactly be much point in adapting the Marvel Zombies comics if it wasn’t.
