🚨 Baldur’s Gate 3 players, you’re MISSING the BEST boss banter in the game! 😱
Millions have played, but only a few have heard these iconic lines. A devilish voice, a chilling taunt—did you skip the fight that everyone’s raving about? 👹
Why are so many missing it? The answer lies in one sneaky choice… 🤔
Your class will determine how NPCs and some companions perceive you, and there’s lots of unique content locked behind certain classes, and even some class combinations. For example, you can call out the fake paladins of Tyr if you happen to be a cleric/paladin multiclass who actually follows Tyr. However, one infamous character has some especially juicy conversations that you can only experience if you’re playing a sorcerer.
Auntie Ethel Has Some Great Unique Dialogue Options For Sorcerers
Ethel Has A Lot To Say To Wild Magic And Draconic Sorcerers

Auntie Ethel has some of the best banter with sorcerers. She has unique voice lines for every race and origin when she casts Vicious Mockery, but sorcerers in particular get some immersive dialogue options when meeting her in the grove. If you choose the sorcerer-specific line about being able to cure yourself with your own magic when talking to Ethel with the Wild Magic or Draconic subclass, you’ll see that she knows the nature of your magic. Ethel especially loves talking to Wild Magic sorcerers and prefers them over “stuffy” wizards, as seen in a YouTube video by JibunFade.
Sorcerer Subclass
Auntie Ethel’s Response
Wild Magic – “Don’t worry, my magic can fix me up! Probably.”
“Ah yes, but will your magic cure your ills or turn you blue?”
Draconic Bloodline – “I am magic. If I can’t cure myself, nothing you concoct will.”
“You or the dragon your blood hitched a ride with?”
Storm Sorcery/Shadow Magic – “I am magic. If I can’t cure myself, nothing you concoct will.”
“Ohh, someone’s confident, aren’t they? Be careful, sweetie. How’s that saying go… the bigger they act, the bigger the whack?”
Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be unique options for Shadow Magic sorcerers, since after this subclass was added in Patch 8, no new voice lines were recorded for Ethel. However, I would like to believe that she is less willing to converse with this type of sorcerer, as she can later express her dislike of shadow magic, and it makes sense that she wouldn’t want to waste her time on a wielder of it. If you let her try to remove your illithid parasite, she’ll berate you for not telling her of its Netherese origins.
“Filthy shadow magic – brings nothing but chains and misery. How could I have missed the stink?” – Auntie Ethel
Sorcerers appear to be able to pick up on there being more to Ethel than meets the eye. After this initial dialogue with her, they will also get an option to call out that there seems to be something “strange” about her without the need for a die roll.
Sorcerer is one of the most popular classes, per Larian’s 2023 statistics on X, but with millions upon millions of playthroughs as other classes, it’s safe to say that plenty of fans haven’t yet chatted with Auntie Ethel as a sorcerer.
The average person can’t pick up on the “smell of iron and fire” when meeting someone with a draconic bloodline, so where a lot of players are tricked by Auntie Ethel’s disguise in their first playthrough, someone playing a sorcerer may piece together that she’s a hag from the start.

Ethel Has A Complicated Dynamic With The Dark Urge
Playing As The Dark Urge Origin Also Unlocks Exclusive Dialogue With Ethel

People playing with the Dark Urge origin also unlock some special voice lines when talking to Ethel, which may link to her soft spot for sorcerers, since that is the origin’s default class. Ethel isn’t phased by their violence, and she appears to revel in it instead. Reddit user Interesting_Owl_1815 shared a screenshot of the dialogue sequence they experienced, where we can see that Ethel is exceedingly kind to the Dark Urge despite their threats — almost suspiciously so.
All things considered, Ethel probably isn’t a stranger to boiling people in a stew, given the pot of unidentifiable ingredients you can come across in her lair. She may be willing to show kindness to Durge because she feels a kinship with them, though it’s likely that this is another example of her manipulative personality, taking advantage of someone who is clearly in a vulnerable position. For such a minor villain, Ethel has some of the best writing in Baldur’s Gate 3, and her unique dialogue instances are the perfect proof.
