NetEase has recently announced a brand-new single-player action game called Blood Message, and it’s a major departure from its hit live-service game Marvel Rivals. In fact, it couldn’t be a more different type of game from bottom to top. Blood Message is set in Ancient China near the end of the Tang Dynasty and follows a father-son duo on a tumultuous journey across an expansive landscape. Blood Message has serious potential to be a groundbreaking cinematic narrative experience, assuming NetEase can deliver on its promises.

While NetEase’s Marvel Rivals is a live service 6-v-6 shooter grounded in multiplayer gameplay, Blood Message is the complete opposite and comes from a new dev team, 24 Entertainment Lin’an, a subsidiary of ThunderFire Studio. The game is powered by Unreal Engine 5 and “enhanced with proprietary tools and technologies by the studio,” offering players a unique and original story told from the perspective of commoners in the final years of the Tang Dynasty in Ancient China. While there are only limited details available for Blood Message so far, the trailer has me very excited about what’s to come.

Why I’m Excited For Blood Message

A Linear Single-Player Action Game Set In Ancient China

While there’s been a wave of single-player stealth action games released over the past few years, I can’t help but be excited about Blood Message. On the surface, it doesn’t seem like Blood Message is going to do anything especially groundbreaking, but the trailer has more than enough intrigue to get me interested in seeing what the larger story has to offer. It’s NetEase’s first single-player game, which is a major departure from previous titles such as Marvel Rivals, and will be a completely linear narrative-based experience.

In terms of story, Blood Message looks like it could be the type of character-driven experience that I wish Assassin’s Creed Shadows would have focused on instead of having two main characters with convoluted backstories and an underwhelming climax. The game essentially looks like God of War meets Ghost of Tsushima, with cinematic gameplay and compelling characters at the heart of the narrative. It follows a father-son duo on their journey to deliver an important message that could seal the fate of the entire country.

NetEase’s First Single-Player Game Is A Great Move

NetEase isn’t a stranger to wuxia-style games, and the company actually served as a publisher for Everstone Studios’ open-world RPG, Where Winds Meet, which is set in the same period as Blood Message. Ahead of its planned Western release, Where Winds Meet has already found strong success with Chinese audiences, which might explain NetEase’s move to create a single-player wuxia game for a larger market. Blood Message could very well be a major success given the current trends in gaming, where single-player, narrative-focused cinematic games have become extremely popular.

If NetEase can actually deliver on its various promises about Blood Message, this could be a great move for the studio. Live-service games such as Marvel Rivals have seen a recent decline in player count for various reasons, and the market for these types of games seems unpredictable at best. On the other hand, narrative-driven single-player games are almost guaranteed to garner a strong audience, assuming the game is of high quality and delivers on its promises. There’s no reason to think that Blood Message won’t do so, and it could indicate a shift in focus for future NetEase projects.

The atmosphere and art look absolutely stunning, and the few glimpses at gameplay we get from the trailer look incredibly fun.

While information about Blood Message is fairly limited at the moment, and we only have the reveal trailer, the footage in the trailer is very promising. The atmosphere and art look absolutely stunning, and the few glimpses at gameplay we get from the trailer look incredibly fun. It’s a good sign of things to come, and I have very high hopes for NetEase’s first single-player launch. Blood Message could end up being a surprising and exhilarating experience for fans of single-player action games, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for more details as they release in the coming months.
