The series premiered Season 2 on Dec. 26, 2024, three years after the first one, and it quickly broke all the records on the streaming service. The show was already the biggest series both in non-English and English, and the newly released season certified that. As Netflix South Korea accidentally posted a live video confirming the Season 3 release date of June 27, 2025 (via Forbes), fans won’t have to wait long after the jaw-dropping Season 2 finale.
Season 2 follows Seong Gi-hun’s attempt to find the people who organize the games and put a stop to the sadistic affairs. Unfortunately, he gets drawn into the games again, and, as he attempts to save as many people as he can, he teams up with the wrong person, which ends up taking a very important person for him in the season finale.
Netflix has already confirmed that Season 3, which will also end the original series, will be released on the platform in 2025. However, it hasn’t revealed the official release date yet. However, one teaser on Netflix Korea showed Young-hee, the girl robot from the first game, “Red Light, Green Light,” being moved to a different location with a different robot, Chul-soo. The video was titled Squid Game Season 3 2025 Release,” marking June 27, 2025, as the release date.

The video has been set to private since, but the internet screenshots have been making rounds on social media, further fueling the anticipation for what comes next in the bloody series. The date is just six months after Season 2 dropped, and filming for both series happened back-to-back, so a summer release wouldn’t be shocking. This will be a welcome treat to fans after waiting for so long for Season 2.
Initially, there were no plans for a continuation after Season 1. However, the show’s resounding popularity led Netflix to renew it, so creator Hwang Dong-hyuk got back to work. While he wrote the second season, he felt like the story needed more episodes to be told, so he split it into two seasons. Season 2 ended with a major cliffhanger, with the games over halfway done, which would be a good idea for Season 3 to premiere sooner rather than later.
The Squid Game Universe Will Continue
Although there aren’t any plans to continue Squid Game beyond the upcoming Season 3, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk assured fans that the universe will continue. “I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away. Season 3 is not going to be the end of the Squid Game universe.”
David Fincher is currently working on the English-language version of Squid Game, which has been reportedly working quietly on for the past few years. So far, there aren’t many details about the remake but British screenwriter Dennis Kelly will pen the script. Squid Game: The Challenge has also been renewed for Season 2, further expanding the universe.
Seasons 1 and 2 of Squid Game are available on Netflix.
