Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Sophie Gommage Day Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s excellent prologue remains memorable, even after dozens of hours of playing the game. This section emphasises the stakes of the game’s primary conflict and reminds us of what we’re fighting for while on the Continent.

The prologue also introduces us to Gustave, Maelle and several other characters. Although the section of the prologue that occurs before the gommage is primarily concerned with the brief rekindling of Sophie and Gustave’s relationship, you can actually spot a couple of characters who will become relevant later.

The most obvious of these characters is Lune, who can be seen performing on her guitar for a crowd of onlookers. However, Lune, Maelle and Gustave aren’t the only eventual party members who appear in this initial section of the prologue.

Teacher, Farmer – Dancer?

An observant user named Alig200 recently posted a Reddit thread, pointing out that one of the dancers in the prologue is none other than Sciel. Sciel is wearing an outfit very similar to Sophie’s and, strangely, she’s also wearing a wreath of flowers, generally considered a symbol of one who is about to gommage.

This is a matter of some debate, as Expedition 33 heavily implies that people wearing flowers in the prologue are set to gommage. This can be observed with Sophie, who gets a flower from Gustave to celebrate her last day alive. Sciel isn’t gommaging for another year, but perhaps she’s wearing the flowers to maintain the uniform of the dance group, as the other dancers are also wearing flowers.

We also know that most, if not all, of the dancers (besides Sciel) are having their gommage, as they’ve carved pictos into their skin specifically to perform the magical dance. Sciel may have joined the dance because she’d already had pictos carved into her skin, presumably for expeditionary purposes, but this is just conjecture.

There’s also a chance that Sandfall is reusing Sciel’s model, and this dancer is not actually Sciel. The aforementioned poster did spot Sciel while using free-cam tools, after all. However, even if Sandfall had never expected someone to look any closer, reusing a main character’s model is a strange choice, which makes this theory more unlikely.

Whatever the truth, I sincerely hope Sciel enjoyed dancing the day away before the next dawn brought her across the sea to the Continent.
