Marvel Rivals players have taken notice of an inconsistency in voice lines, as it seems most of the in-game heroes are confused about what’s a squid and what is an octopus. Namor in Marvel Rivals uses an ability called Monstro Spawn that summons what appear to be octopi, but there are a few voice lines in the game that also refer to them as squid.

These turret-like mollusks seem to confuse even the heroes in the game, and fans of the title have come together to discuss the true identity of these “angry octopi.” A recent Reddit post from Neat-Ad2953 stated that “Every single voice line” refers to Namor’s Monstro Spawn as squid, which is not correct. Fans were quick to jump into the comments to defend the heroes that do refer to the ability correctly, while others made jokes about how even a brute can outsmart a scientist.

Is It A Mollusk Or A Fish?

While this may not be the most important thing for Rivals fans to be worried about, it does pose a very interesting question. Why do some of the heroes know that Namor’s turrets are octopi and others claim they are squids? Fans in the thread mention this could just be a simple translation issue, others believe maybe NetEase is poking fun at a few of the brute-like heroes on the roster. Peni Parker states “Those are some angry Octopi” whenever she sees them, while Squirrel Girls yells, “Sorry Calamari!” when she destroys one of the turrets, insinuating that they are squid.

Commenter YodasKetamin3 mentions that Hulk calls them an octopus, even though Hulk also refers to Namor as “Stupid Fish Man”. Others point out that Luna Snow sometimes says “Those squids are on ice” when killing a spawn, even though she also says “The only octopus I like is grilled”. While a few of the heroes may not be able to distinguish between an octopus and a squid, it seems that both Hulk and Mr. Fantastic do understand that these are indeed octopi, also known as cephalopods.

Some May Not Realize The Dialogue Can Be Entertaining

Marvel Rivals can be infuriating, especially when it comes to ranked play, but there are quite a few things that make the title so fun and engaging, including hero dialogue. Voice lines have also been a point of contention, since Hela seems to always bother fans with her “Healing? Why would I need healing?” line, but they can also create some comedic relief as well as provide interesting lore. Seeing the heroes interact with each other is quite intriguing, whether it be on the battlefield or in the spawn room.

Whether fans believe Namor’s turrets are squid or octopi, they can all agree on two things; Marvel Rivals is a ton of fun and has several new things coming soon to keep our attention.
