Robert Pattinson will be 41 when The Batman sequel will finally release, yet fan-favorite Henry Cavill was deemed too old to play Superman at 39.
It was in 2022 that Robert Pattinson-starrer The Batman was released to immense success and praise and a subsequent sequel was announced. However, even after all this time, the film hasn’t begun production and has recently been pushed back a year, from 2026 to 2027.

So when the sequel potentially finally arrives, Pattinson will already be 41 years old. This is sort of surprising since Henry Cavill was even too old to play Superman at 39 and was subsequently ‘not hired.’

While James Gunn is busy developing his version of the DCU, Robert Pattinson‘s Batman exists elsewhere. Thanks to Matt Reeves‘ vision and direction, The Batman has become a favorite of fans. However, fans have been waiting for more than two years for its sequel, which was supposed to be released in 2026.
Unfortunately, much to the disappointment of fans, The Batman 2 has gotten even more delayed and has received a new release date of October 1, 2027, instead of the previously reported October 2, 2026 (via The Hollywood Reporter). Having announced several dates since it was first confirmed, the lead star Pattinson will be 41 by the time the sequel hits theatres.
This rings a few alarm bells since at 39, Henry Cavill was considered too old to play Superman and was subsequently not re-hired by Gunn (via Collider). Although the decision not to rehire Cavill was made in order to revamp the DCU and Pattinson’s Batman exists in the elsewhere world with a completely different plot, this detail might not sit right with some fans.
Moreover, Pattinson’s age raises the question of the franchise’s future since if another sequel is confirmed, he might be well over 45 or so when it comes out.
Why is Robert Pattinson’s The Batman 2 delayed?

Matt Reeves, the co-writer and director of The Batman, is known for his meticulous and methodical process and has been working on a script for the sequel for quite some time now. Given last year’s twin SAG-AFTRA strikes, the film was even more delayed, and hence as per reports, the script for the sequel is still in the works.
Recently, James Gunn, the DCU helmer, confirmed this on the social media platform Threads, when asked by a fan.
The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.
Moreover, since Reeves recently remarked to The Hollywood Reporter that the successful The Penguin and its potential second season would also affect the bigger picture and subsequently The Batman 2, it is a possibility the script might have been delayed because of this as well. So while we would all love to see Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight again, the script remains vital and we hope Reeves finishes it up without further delaying the new date.
The Batman 2 is expected to hit the theatres on October 1, 2027.
