Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us finally has a release date! And we sure would like to see this cut content from Abby’s story in Season 2.

Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us comes out on April 13, 2025. Season 2 will follow the game so we can expect to be introduced to Abby Anderson and her story. With Kaitlyn Dever taking on the role, the series has the opportunity to expand on one key aspect of her backstory that was cut from Naughty Dog’s second game.

According to Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in the game, there was a deleted flashback revealing Abby’s history with WLF leader Isaac Dixon. The scene would’ve given us more context into their relationship and explained why he was so forgiving of her betrayal. Let’s hope it makes it to Season 2.

In The Last of Us Part 2, we learn about the story of Abby and her life during the zombie apocalypse. When we first see Abby, she appears to be one of Isaac’s most trusted lieutenants, despite eventually betraying the WLF to help Lev and Yara. And when Isaac forgives her, it always seems slightly out of character, considering his ruthless leadership.
According to what Abby’s voice actress Laura Bailey said in an interview with Kinda Funny on YouTube, a deleted scene would have revealed how Isaac took her in after the Fireflies disbanded.
One of the things that never made it to the game, originally in some of the flashbacks, you were meant to see Abby going to the Wolves from the Fireflies. And it wasn’t ever a conscious decision [for her] to go to the Wolves
Abby didn’t actively choose to join the Wolves after the Fireflies disbanded. Bailey shared how she was taken in by Isaac, a former Firefly himself and a close friend of her father.
At that point, she was an orphan. I think she was only 15, I think maybe younger when everything happened. And that was where she was taken under the wing of Isaac. Isaac was a Firefly and a friend of her father, so that’s why she went there. That’s why they have the relationship they do because he kind of became a father figure to her.
With Jeffrey Wright bringing Isaac to life in The Last of Us season 2, it’d be interesting to see if HBO decides to bring this part of Abby’s story to life. While The Last of Us Part 2 depicted him as a brutal leader obsessed with eradicating the Seraphites, adding this lost backstory would show a more nuanced side of him.
It could be the Bill and Frank episode of Season 2

Abby’s story in the game is based on revenge, but it gradually transforms into one of redemption as she begins questioning the WLF’s brutality. Imagine if Season 2 includes the cut storyline, Abby’s betrayal of Isaac becomes even more heartbreaking and would probably be a gut-wrenching story. It could be similar to the extra depth we saw with Bill and Frank’s story in Season 1.
Instead of just defying her commander, Abby would be turning against the man who raised her. Her final confrontation with Isaac happens when she tries to escape with Lev. Isaac refuses to show mercy to Lev, but he’s still willing to take Abby back. He even seems hesitant to shoot her, which makes more sense when considering their cut backstory.
HBO’s adaptation has had more focus on character-driven drama than on the game’s violent action. Given this approach, it would make perfect sense to bring back this lost detail about Isaac and Abby’s relationship. If you’re ready for Season 2 of The Last of Us, it comes out on HBO and Max on April 13.
