The Residence creator Paul William Davies gives an intriguing tease about the series’ season 2 chances. The mystery comedy, produced by Shonda Rhimes, centers on detective Cordelia Cupp (portrayed by Uzo Aduba) and her investigation of a White House murder. Along with Aduba, the cast of The Residence includes Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Randall Park, Molly Griggs, Ken Marino, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and more. Having premiered on Netflix, the show quickly garnered praise from audiences and currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 82%, but it is unclear whether The Residence will continue.
During a recent interview with TVLine, Davies addressed a potential season 2, expressing interest in creating more scenarios for Cordelia. The creator teased that The Residence could revisit the White House or move forward to another location entirely, adding: “I’ve got ideas.” Read Davies’ comments regarding The Residence season 2 below:
I really do hope that I have the opportunity to tell more stories with it, and I think it would start with Cordelia. She’s Cordelia Cup, she’s the sun around which everything else revolves. So whether it’s more in the White House or somewhere else, I really do think there’s more story to tell with her. I’ve got ideas, so I hope people respond to her and [to the show], and then we can do it.
What This Means For The Residence Season 2
Time Will Tell If There’s Another Season
The mystery of The Residence was Chief Usher A.B. Wynter’s inopportune death amid the Australian State Dinner. As the case unfolded, Cordelia realized that several White House occupants and staff members had encountered Wynter’s dead body, making things much more complicated. However, in The Residence finale, it was revealed that Lilly Schumacher was responsible for the murder, committing the crime after Wynter threatened to expose her unscrupulous tendencies. This wrapped the show’s main storyline, but Cordelia potentially hopping on another investigation could lead to a future season 2.
Shondaland has found success on streaming, having produced Bridgerton and now, The Residence. The mystery series may also benefit from its strong cast, highlighted by Aduba, who has won several Emmy Awards, and the impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, a possible factor in its renewal decision. Viewer reactions are likely to be just as important to getting season 2 though, and while the Popcornmeter presently sits at 67%, it has a relatively small number of ratings that can inflate as The Residence gains traction on Netflix.
Our Take On The Residence Season 2
It Could Present A Fun Opportunity
After meeting all of the many personalities in the White House, having Cordelia tackle another mystery there would make for a perplexing, but entertaining return. However, should The Residence get renewed for season 2, going elsewhere and incorporating completely new characters can be a fun opportunity for the show, and possible additional installments. Davies shared that there are other adventures Cordelia can go on, and based on his comments, strong viewership and audience reception may be key to getting future episodes of The Residence made.
