It makes sense that Deadpool & Wolverine made more money at the box office than both of its predecessors, but it’s surprising just how big the margin is. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 made $781 million and $786 million at the box office respectively which are both pretty big numbers in their own rights, especially considering that the first two films weren’t part of the official MCU. These numbers put both films in the top 30 of highest-grossing superhero films of all time, as well as two of the highest-grossing opening weekends for a superhero film.

However, Deadpool & Wolverine’s impressive $1.3 billion box office is nearly double the amount that each of the preceding films made. It’s an incredible feat for a series to have such a jump in success, and even more impressive that the movie that managed to do that was the third in a trilogy. Series can have a hard time maintaining their audience as interest tapers out towards the conclusion, but Deadpool’s Marvel history and his solo trilogy managed to find the solution to that.

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 were both good movies, but they weren’t the landmark event that Deadpool & Wolverine was. The biggest draw was undoubtedly Jackman’s return after his presumed retirement as Wolverine in Logan. His role meant that an icon would be returning, and it marked the official introduction of the X-Men into the MCU.
