Patch 8 still isn’t out, as it’s expected sometime this year, but needs to go through extensive stress testing with players. While Larian won’t leave Baldur’s Gate 3 behind entirely, sticking around for the usual support fixes, this will be the last major update for the game as the studio moves on to something new.
What’s Next For Larian?
After Patch 8, Larian Will Be Moving Full-Steam Ahead For Its Next Project, Codenamed “Excalibur”
Revealed during a panel at the Digital Dragons Conference in May 2024, CEO of Larian, Swen Vincke, shared that this upcoming title is currently codenamed Excalibur. Once Patch 8 launches to Baldur’s Gate 3, Excalibur will be the studio’s full-focus. An upcoming RPG, the details are scarce, but this move in development is big news. According to a statement to VideoGamer, Larian’s “…full attention is focused on crafting their next title.” and will be moving towards a media blackout.
“Got me all nostalgic – it really has been a[n] incredible journey so far. But the story ain’t over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don’t mind.” – Swen Vincke
Before Larian goes dark, they’re bidding a heartfelt, and major, farewell to Baldur’s Gate 3 with this final patch. Larian’s community support for this title has been remarkable, and a media blackout will surely not go unnoticed by the gaming community. Vincke had previously stated at the SEA Game Awards that Excalibur is a hopeful release for 2028 or 2029, but asks fans not to hold them to a release period or to expect Early Access.
For Larian, much of it is up in the air for them as well, as they “experiment” with things. Clearly, it’s a long road ahead before players see much of anything for the title codenamed Excalibur, but soon enough, Larian will be diving deep into its development.
