Ever since its first release in 1997, Final Fantasy 7 has captivated the hearts of millions of players with its narrative and gameplay. In an interview discussing various aspects of Rebirth, Hamaguchi also shed light on the nature of Cloud and Aerith’s relationship. He clarified that while there may be a deeper emotional connection, there is no romantic angle between them.
This insight challenges the various assumptions the community has about the Cloud and Aerith’s relationship. The most common belief has been that they share romantic chemistry, a topic that has sparked countless debates over the years.
This debate reached fever high in Rebirth, when one of the standout moments of the game came in an alternate timeline showing Cloud and Aerith sharing a peaceful, intimate scene that provides a rare moment of peace and rest from the otherwise chaotic events unfolding around them.
Hamaguchi acknowledged that this scene has the potential to create various assumptions about their relationship, by the players. However, he went on to emphasize that the scene simply shows the strength of their connection. His exact words were:
There can be many different interpretations of what this scene truly means for each player. But Aerith has always been this sort of sisterly character pulling Cloud along and encouraging him.
He wanted to emphasize that their relationship is built upon mutual support, with Aerith acting as a guiding force (a ray of hope) in Cloud’s life, helping him navigate his inner struggles and the challenges they face together.

This completely shifts the focus away from traditional romantic notions and highlights the deep emotional and supportive connection that defines their relationship.
As Rebirth continues to expand on the characters and lore of Final Fantasy 7, with even a PC version coming on January 23, 2025, it becomes clear that Cloud and Aerith’s connection transcends romance. Their bond represents the very strength of friendship, trust, and understanding.
In the end, fans will continue to find their own meaning in the interactions between these two iconic characters, but one thing is clear: the bond they share plays a vital role in defining Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
