This 20-Year-Old RPG Series Has One of the Best Voice Casts In Gaming

The Fable series began with a trilogy of brilliant games that captured the hearts of players before losing its way with a canceled game and a release that struggled to recapture the series’ magic. Set in Albion, a fictionalized version of England, the games tell engaging stories of characters who can be. No matter what their alignment is, the protagonist faces threats from dark forces seeking to conquer and subjugate the land. These tales unfold in a whimsical fantasy world interwoven with deep, sometimes heart-wrenching narratives while also addressing real-world themes like industrialization.

One feature that makes the Fable franchise stand out from the competition is its star-studded voice cast, which often includes greats of the British acting and comedy scene. Fable has a roster of performers that most blockbuster films would be jealous of. The upcoming reboot is set to maintain this tradition. The IT Crowd star Richard Ayoade is confirmed to be a part of the upcoming Fable reboot, so the franchise’s legacy of excellent vocal performances will continue on.

The eldest child of the hero from Fable II becomes the ruler of Albion after the death of their parent. Initially seen as a strong and adventurous leader, he embarks on expeditions to foreign lands until a fateful journey to Aurora. There, he encounters the darkness and sees the same prophecy of a destructive force ravaging Albion that the protagonist later witnesses. Out of fear, he introduces harsh measures like deforestation and child labor so that he can amass the funds needed for an army to fight the coming evil.

By the end of the game, King Logan’s true intentions are revealed. Though his methods were cruel, he genuinely cared for Albion and its people. When his younger sibling takes the throne, he offers himself and his personal guard to their service, showing that his actions, while misguided, were driven by a desire to protect the kingdom.

Michael Fassbender voices King Logan in Fable III and brings gravitas and wisdom to the role. While he’s best known for portraying a young Magneto in the X-Men films, Fassbender has a very impressive and varied movie career. He also starred in the Assassin’s Creed movie and has appeared in 300Inglourious Basterds, and Prometheus. His ability to deliver a stoic, Shakespearean performance makes him an absolutely perfect fit for the fantasy world of Fable.

John Cleese Is Perfectly Cast as Jasper the Butler

Jasper the Butler Appears In Fable III

John Cleese could be described as English comedic royalty, but that doesn’t fully capture the depth of his talent. He brings a unique blend of class and dry wit to the role of Jasper, the loyal butler who has served both the hero of Fable III and their parents for many years. Highly educated and deeply trusted, Jasper is one of the few individuals privy to the original hero’s secrets, including knowledge of their inner sanctum. Throughout the game, Jasper acts as a constant source of respect, trust, and pride in the hero, doing everything he can to assist them on their journey.

Cleese is one of the masterminds behind some of Britain’s most iconic comedies, including Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. His versatility extends beyond comedy, with notable appearances as Q in Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond films and as Nearly Headless Nick in the Harry Potter series. Cleese has also lent his voice to other video games, portraying Sir Cadwell in The Elder Scrolls Online and Sir Roderick in Jade Empire.

Sir Walter Beck is an old-fashioned soldier who prefers an honest fight to the complexities of Albion’s political landscape. He is the ideal right-hand man for the hero of Albion and is the one who trains them in combat from an early age. Thanks to his knowledge of the world, the player is able to recruit like-minded allies, and he serves as a steadfast companion throughout their journey. Walter takes on a fatherly role, offering sage advice and moments of humor, all wrapped in his strong and determined persona.

Even after being blinded and corrupted by the darkness, Walter manages to recover and continue helping the player. Tragically, the darkness possesses him once more, and he becomes the game’s final boss, forcing the player to defeat and kill him in a heartbreaking conclusion.

Bernard Hill breathes life into Sir Walter in Fable III and really brings an air of wisdom and gravitas to the role. Before his passing in 2024, Hill was celebrated for his commanding performances as the captain in Titanic, the judge in ParaNorman, and most notably, as King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings. His ability to embody a leader with both strength and vulnerability makes him the perfect choice to guide the player through the battles of Albion. Who better to stand by your side than the Lord of the Mark?

Comedy Icon Stephen Fry Plays Recurring Fable Character Reaver

Reaver Has Appeared In Fable II and III

Bones - Stephen Fry as Dr. Gordon Wyatt reaver fable Bones - Stephen Fry as Dr. Gordon Wyatt reaver fable

Reaver is a recurring character in the Fable franchise and is actually the Hero of Skill from Fable II. He is a self-centered and charismatic pirate with unmatched marksmanship skills. Reaver’s personality consistently walks the line between good and evil, though he leans heavily toward the latter, driven by his insatiable lust for wealth, power, and debauchery.

In Fable III, Reaver does try to stop the hero from defeating Logan because he fears it may hurt his business empire, but he ultimately becomes a useful ally. Reaver Industries plays a key role in carrying out the decisions made by the hero after they ascend to the throne, further cementing his pragmatic but morally dubious role in the story.

Stephen Fry voices Reaver in Fable II and III. Fry is best known for being a part of the comedy team Fry & Laurie alongside Doctor House himself. He also played Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, the Master of Lake-town in The Hobbit films, and appeared in V for Vendetta. Additionally, he narrated the LittleBigPlanet series.

Zoë Wanamaker Appears as the Seer Theresa In Fable II and III

Teresa First Appeared In the Original Fable

Zoë Wanamaker as Madame Hooch teaches a flying class in Harry Potter.

Theresa is the older sister of the Hero of Oakvale, the protagonist of the first Fable game, and has since appeared as a powerful but blind seer. She is over 600 years old and operates from the shadows to aid heroes in their quests to prevent cataclysmic events. Though her guidance is invaluable, she often shares only what she deems necessary, leaving her advice vague or open-ended. Despite this, she is an essential ally to the heroes of both Fable II and Fable III.

In her later appearances, Seer Theresa is played by Zoë Wanamaker, who is arguably best known for playing the broom instructor Madame Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. While she’s not quite as well known as some other Fable voice actors, she’s had several other notable roles, like Susan Harper in My Family and Cassandra in Doctor Who.

The Legend That Is Sir Ben Kingsley Puts a Welsh Accent In Fable III

Sir Ben Kingsley Plays Sabine In the Fable Series

In Fable III, Ben Kingsley voices Sabine, the leader of a nomadic tribe living in the frosty woods of northern Albion. Sabine is an old friend of Walter Beck and a fierce warrior and tactician. Despite his diminutive stature, he commands great respect and speaks with a remarkably strong Welsh accent.

Sir Ben Kingsley is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, with countless awards and highly acclaimed roles to his name. He delivered unforgettable performances as Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhi and Itzhak Stern in Schindler’s List. Beyond his accolades, Kingsley has showcased his versatility and humor by appearing in fantastical and comedic films. He also played Nizam in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Tamir in The Dictator, and Merenkahre in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.

Simon Pegg has had a fantastic rise to prominence that began with work on the sketch show Big Train before he created the beloved series Spaced. He gained international recognition with Shaun of the Dead, which kicked off the “Cornetto Trilogy” and earned a place as one of the greatest zombie films of all time. The trilogy continued with Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. Pegg has since showcased his versatility with roles in films like Paul, where he takes an RV trip with a Seth Rogen-voiced alien, voicing Buck the weasel in the Ice Age series, and playing Scotty in the recent Star Trek films. He has also established himself as an action star alongside Tom Cruise in several Mission: Impossible films.

In gaming, Pegg is known for voicing Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black in Hogwarts Legacy. In Fable III, he plays Ben Finn, a loyal and charismatic member of Major Swift’s old guard. Ben Finn goes through many character-defining moments and becomes a steadfast ally to the hero throughout their journey.

In Fable III, the Rebel Page Is Voiced By Naomie Harris

Not all those under Logan’s tyranny can turn the other cheek and accept the harshness of a new world, and neither can Naomie Harris’s character, Page. This no-nonsense leader of the Bowerstone Resistance has seen the poorer side of the city and how people are exploited and disrespected. She has a personal vendetta against Reaver, as his influence caused some of the worst conditions in the heart of the city. Page becomes a brilliant ally to the hero, helping them garner the support of the people of Bowerstone to rise up.

Naomie Harris does a great job in Fable III, but she is best known as Selena in 28 Days Later, Tia Dalma in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and Moneypenny in SkyfallSpectre, and No Time to Die. Harris has also taken on other video game roles, like Tia Dalma in Sea of Thieves.

Fable III’s Voice Cast Is Filled with Comedians

Jason Manford, Jonathan Ross and Mark Heap Are All In Fable III

Brian, Voiced by Mark Heap, and his magical gargoyle in Fable III

Fable III features more British comedic talent. Jason Manford voices Private Jammy, the “luckiest” soldier in Albion. Jonathan Ross provides the voice of Barry Hatch, Reaver’s right-hand man and commentator in the arena-style mission. Mark Heap voices Brian, a gnome-obsessed character who asks the hero to retrieve a package. This package turns out to be one of the talkative gargoyles from Fable II, which gives life and sentience to Brian’s collection of gnomes.

Jason Manford has appeared in theater as Adolfo Pirelli in Sweeney Todd. Jonathan Ross is a long-time British TV presenter who went uncredited as an “additional voice” in Halo 3. Mark Heap is best known as the strange neighbor Jim in Friday Night Dinner.
