If Phantom Blade Zero isn’t one of your most anticipated releases of this year, your feelings might change after you watch the game’s latest trailer.
Developed by S-Game, Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming action RPG that you could describe as Ghost of Tsushima meets Devil May Cry.
If you only caught a passing glimpse of Phantom Blade Zero, you’d be adamant that it’s a soulslike and while it does take inspiration from FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, developers remain adamant that it’s an action RPG title.
I’d certainly say it’s one for those of you who are looking for a challenge though, albeit an accessible one.
I had the opportunity to sample Phantom Blade Zero at last year’s Gamescom and I wasn’t half bad at it considering I have limited soulslike experience. In fact, I came away incredibly impressed.
The game’s latest trailer has only made me feel more sure of that assessment.
One thing I admire about Phantom Blade Zero is how upfront it is with showcasing gameplay.
The entirety of my preview was made up of combat encounters, and now here we have yet another in depth glimpse of what the title will offer – hardly any cinematics in sight.
In the ‘Year of the Snake’ trailer, we see the game’s protagonist go up against the Chief Disciple of the Seven Stars, a group of seven sword-wielding foes.
As if a seven vs. one battle wasn’t hard enough, the group then puppeteers a more powerful entity that looks like an absolute nightmare to kill, in the best way.
This fellow is titled Chief Disciple’s Fallen Hope and how you best him, I do not know.
As he’s puppeteered by the raised aforementioned Disciples, this foe never touches the ground, instead looming just above you as he swings and sways, landing a number of devastating blows.
Trust me, you need to watch this trailer to fully grasp what it is I’m trying to describe.
If you like what you see, Phantom Blade Zero is set to land this year on PlayStation 5 and PC, although the game remains without a release date for now.
