Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a new open-world FPP role-playing game that is slowly rising the charts and becoming the next big thing on Steam. Although the game was released just days ago, on the 23rd of this month, it has already garnered more views on Twitch than the remastered version of Oblivion that was released more than a month back.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon has an earlier installment as well, with the name Tainted Grail: Conquest. While Conquest followed a more roguelike, combined with deck-building sort of mechanics, The Fall of Avalon did a complete switcheroo and gave us a more Scrollslike experience similar to Oblivion and Skyrim.

This dark fantasy game is developed by Questline, which did a great job of making the players feel immersed in their game. So much so that RPG newcomers are preferring this game over Oblivion or Skyrim because of its combat and potion mechanics, which feel like a step up from the games made by Bethesda.

While the Oblivion remaster sold more than 4 million copies, three days after release, and hit its notable peak of 216,000 concurrent players, that too just on Steam, its current average player count has settled down at 40,000. In comparison, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is averaging about 25,000 players per day and has an all-time peak of more than 56,000 viewers on Twitch, and its growth is far from over.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon feels more like a love letter to Oblivion, not just in terms of gameplay, but also in the wonder of exploring a new world that is filled with mysteries and magic. Oblivion is a game that helped define a generation of RPGs, and while it introduced us to the magical world of Cyrodiil, Tainted Grail is carrying that legacy forward but with a much darker and somber tone.

Instead of imitating what Bethesda has created over the years, it builds upon it and gives us an experience more grounded and refined, that feels familiar. Although Tainted Grail has not hit those massive numbers like the remastered version of the classic 2006 RPG, Tainted Grail has a lot of momentum in its way, and people are getting more and more hyped to play it.

It might not be the biggest game out there right now, but looking at its growth, and if the current buzz for the game is any sign, then this might just be the next cult favourite for a lot of RPG enjoyers.
