It’s safe to say Assassin’s Creed Shadows had a lot of hurdles to jump before its release. Not only was the game swimming in controversies (regarding its characters and gameplay), but fans were also quick to draw comparisons to Ghost of Tsushima, another beloved title set in Japan.

Despite these challenges, Shadows rose to the occasion and introduced players to an immersive, dynamic world filled with changing seasons and an emphasis on stealth and refined combat mechanics. It has set a high bar for open-world, historical action games.

This success, however, has now placed a massive challenge on Sony’s upcoming Ghost of Yōtei.

The gaming world is no stranger to head-to-head battles between franchises. However, with AC Shadows raising the bar high, Sony’s Ghost of Yōtei faces an uphill battle. Even before the release of Shadows, players were critical of following the story of a new protagonist, Atsu.

Now, with Shadows offering players a beautiful backdrop of the Japan Sekgoku period, all the pressure is on Yōtei to prove that it can deliver something as compelling, or even more so, than its Ubisoft counterpart.

Not only are both games set in the late Sengoku period, but both also follow protagonists who are driven by a desire for revenge, whether it’s a personal vendetta or a larger quest for justice. Each character’s journey is shaped by loss and the drive to right wrongs.

While the two games offer their own unique experiences, these similarities (even in gameplay to some extent) make them compelling counterparts, allowing fans of historical action games to dive into a rich, detailed world filled with intrigue, conflict, and intense, immersive gameplay.

With Assassin’s Creed Shadows already making a huge impact, the pressure is now on Yōtei to not only meet the high expectations set by its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima but also to find its own place in the spotlight amidst a new, formidable competitor.

Sony already had the monumental task of surpassing the Ghost of Tsushima, and now, with Ubisoft showing its true colors after years, the challenge is steeper than ever for Sucker Punch.

Whether you liked Shadows or not, it was a clear step forward for the series and how certain environmental things should be done. So anything less than perfection for Yōtei would leave the title under a lot of scrutiny from fans.

With a competitive backdrop like this, it will be fascinating to see how Yōtei rises to the challenge. Will it offer the innovative gameplay and immersive world players expect? Or will it falter under the weight of comparison?

In the end, the stakes have never been higher, and the battle for dominance in this rich, action-packed genre is about to get even more intense.
