“You’re Absolutely Correct”: Arnold Schwarzenegger Responds To Returning Netflix Show’s Comparisons To His $379M James Cameron Action Comedy

Arnold Schwarzenegger has responded to his returning Netflix show getting compared to his $379 million action comedy directed by James Cameron. Schwarzenegger’s best movies have seen him in serious action roles, from The Terminator franchise to standalone films like The Running ManTotal Recall, and Commando. One of his most defining traits as an action star is how fitting he is in a starring role, making him perfect for a number of high-octane action movies. In recent years, this has included The Expendables movies and other standalone thrillers.

However, he’s also begun to expand into the world of TV, with one of these series being the Netflix show FUBARSeason 1 follows Schwarzenegger’s Luke Brunner, a CIA operative, who learns that his daughter, Emma (Monica Barbaro) also works for the CIA. The action comedy sees the pair trying to learn more about each other while they go on missions together, mixing their work lives with their personal development. FUBAR season 2, however, changes the structure significantly, which is earning it comparisons to a Schwarzenegger movie from 1994.

Was This Familiar Moment From The Show Influenced By The Movie?

Season 2 of the action-comedy sees other characters in FUBAR get involved with Luke and Emma’s missions. One of these is newcomer Greta Nelso (Carrie-Ann Moss), a former German spy who had a past romance with Luke. During season 2, the pair share an action scene involving a tango dance, seemingly an homage to Schwarzenegger’s 1994 action comedy True Lies. Directed by James Cameron, the movie follows Harry Tasker, a spy who must save his family and the world while maintaining his secret identity. The dance scene in the Netflix show has drawn comparisons to one from the 31-year-old movie.

Speaking with The Hollywood ReporterSchwarzenegger confirmed the tango dance scene in FUBAR season 2 was a deliberate reference to True Lies. The actor discussed “the show’s ’90s style” and how it influenced their approach to the show’s structure. He also praised Moss for her role in that particular sequence, explaining the importance of her contribution while also crediting the show’s writers and Netflix for the idea. Check out what Schwarzenegger had to say below:

You’re absolutely correct when you talk about the show’s ’90s style. In True Lies, we had some great dance sequences. It played so well then, we thought it would play well here, too. It really was great to rehearse and prep it.

If we hadn’t had Jamie Lee Curtis, True Lies does not work. She was the right person at the right time, the right dynamic. That’s the same thing here. The people really loved the dynamic between me and Monica in season one, and when we started showing people FUBAR 2, they really loved the dynamic between me and Carrie. I do not take any credit. It was the writers’ idea and Netflix’s idea. But I just think it’s so important to have the right female lead.

What FUBAR Season 2’s True Lies Scene Says About The Show

It’s Unsurprising Given Its Many Schwarzenegger References

Luke and Emma looking at something in FUBAR season 2 FUBAR is no stranger to making references to Schwarzenegger’s career, with plenty of tongue-in-cheek jokes centered around his familiar movie roles. This makes the show’s True Lies reference unsurprising, with the directness of his scene with Moss being complimentary to how the series addresses the action star’s past. It might not be the only nod to his work in the show, but the direct inspiration as confirmed by the lead actor makes it one of the most memorable references.
