One of the stars from True Detective: Night Country has a great television replacement in Netflix’s spy thriller series Black Doves. Created by Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project, Giri/Haji), Black Doves has opened to outstanding reviews, earning a near-perfect 94% Rotten Tomatoes critic score after its December 5, 2024 release date. Keira Knightley (Atonement, Pirates of the Caribbean) leads the cast of Black Doves along with Ben Whishaw of Skyfall and No Time to Die acclaim.
Black Doves follows Knightley’s Helen Webb, the loving and supportive wife of Wallace Webb, a prominent British politician. Webb is also a secret agent working for the mysterious covert spy organization known as the Black Doves, which Mrs. Reed is the head of. Reed confronts Helen over an affair she was having with a civil servant named Jason (Andrew Koji), who was shockingly shot and killed in a park from long range. Suspecting that Helen could be in hot water with a powerful criminal conspiracy, Reed enlists a trusted triggerman named Sam Young (Whishaw) to help Helen avert threats to her life and family.
Finn Bennett’s Cole Atwood In Black Doves Provides A Terrific Replacement For His True Detective Role
Black Doves gives Bennett a compelling new spy/murder mystery show

Finn Bennett, who played Peter in True Detective season 4, appears in Black Doves season 1 as CIA operative Cole Atwood. Since True Detective is an anthology series, Bennett won’t be back to reprise his role from Night Country although there has been speculation about a potential Night Country season 2. However, Black Doves gives Bennett a compelling new spy/murder mystery show in which he’s working for the CIA, which is pretty close to his police officer role in True Detective season 4.

Keira Knightley’s Netflix espionage series Black Doves features a robust cast of secret agents, undercover spies, and lethal assassins.
Bennett, a 25-year-old Irish-British actor, first started acting in 2010, appearing in an episode of Foyle’s War and later Top Boy in 2023. True Detective was his breakout role, which led to his casting in Black Doves season 1. Bennett is slated to star in the upcoming action fantasy series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is another prequel series to Game of Thrones. Bennett will play Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen alongside Bertie Carvel and Daniel Ings.
How Black Doves’ Ending Sets Up Cole Atwood’s Season 2 Return
Cole could either be an asset or a threat to Helen Webb

Without giving anything away in terms of spoilers, Bennett’s CIA operative Cole Atwood could be a key player in Black Doves season 2. Since he is introduced later on in the six-episode first season, there is still a great deal of information that is unknown about him. As a Black Dove, Knightley’s Helen Webb isn’t loyal to any one particular nation, unlike Atwood is to the United States. If Bennett does return in Black Doves season 2, he could either be an asset or a threat to Helen and the entire Black Doves organization.
