The Witcher fans rejoice, The Witcher 3‘s canon ending has finally been confirmed after nearly a decade. And it’s good news!
You’re probably aware that The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt has a ton of endings based on your various decisions throughout the game. There are 36 in fact, which is even more than I thought there were.
The endings range from Geralt getting torn apart by a swarm of monsters after Ciri dies tragically, to Ciri being forced into assuming royal duties and leaving Geralt to travel on his own.
The game’s best ending is, of course, the one in which Geralt manages to keep Ciri alive and out of the hands of her real father, thus allowing her to start her own journey as a Witcher.
We now know for sure that The Witcher IV will have us play as Ciri, and that Geralt is still alive and well, which pretty much confirms The Witcher 3‘s “good” ending was the canon ending all along.
This probably shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, but it’s nice to know Geralt basically embarking on a grief-stricken suicide mission was nothing more than a what-if scenario.
Of course, I’d imagine there’ll be plenty of troubles to come for Geralt and Ciri in The Witcher IV, because a Witcher game completely free from conflict and drama would be tremendously boring (Gwent spinoffs notwithstanding).
My only hope is CD Projekt Red doesn’t decide to kill of Geralt in the upcoming game. Let the main retire to his vineyard in Toussaint and check in on Ciri every now and then. The man has earned a life away from The Path, hasn’t he?
No word yet on when The Witcher IV will release, but expect a long old wait – and plenty of speculation in the meantime.
