Despite Streep’s character Donna Sheridan-Carmichael being revealed to have died in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Cher, who also starred in the 2018 sequel as Donna’s mother Ruby Sheridan, thinks there is still room for Streep in the franchise.

“I keep saying, ‘Meryl, you’ve got to come back,’ ” Cher, 78, told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Tuesday, Nov. 19, surrounding her newly released book Cher: The Memoir, Part 1.

” ‘It’ll be fun. You’ll have a good time. You’ll be able to sing,’ ” she recalled telling Streep, 75.

The Oscar winner told EW that making the second film “was an amazing experience and really fun,” adding, “I took it on a lark because [Meryl] was in there, and I love her. The idea that I was her mother was hysterical.”

Ruby (CHER) surprises granddaughter Sophie (AMANDA SEYFRIED) in "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again." Ten years after "Mamma Mia! The Movie," you are invited to return to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi in an all-new original musical based on the songs of ABBA.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again served as both a prequel and a sequel to the first musical movie, which was released in 2008.

In the present day, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) prepares for the grand reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna in honor of her late mother, Donna (Streep). Throughout the film, we see flashbacks of a young Donna (Lily James) as she journeys to Kalokairi and her romances with young versions of Harry (Hugh Skinner), Bill (Josh Dylan) and Sam (Jeremy Irvine).

Meanwhile, Sophie grapples with her estranged relationship with husband Sky (Dominic Cooper) and the absence of her fathers Harry (Colin Firth), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) and Sam (Pierce Brosnan), who are all overseas.

The movie concludes with a joyous celebration where Sophie, now pregnant, reconnects with Sky and feels closer to her mother than ever. The arrival of her grandmother Ruby (Cher) and a reunion with her long-lost lover Fernando (Andy García) add to the festivities.

Christine Baranski, known for her role as Tanya, revealed that a third Mamma Mia! installment is in the works during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August.

The enthusiasm from Baranski, 72, came three months after Streep told Deadline in May that a meeting was “imminent” regarding proposals for her character’s return in a third film.

And in her new interview with EW, Cher said she and the powers that be are “talking about it” — and that she, too, is open to returning. “I don’t know when they’re going to do it, but I know they’re talking about it,” she added.
